Wilber Pushes On With State

Though it wasn’t the ideal position to be put in the tournament, Wilber Legion Post 101 looked at the task of winning two straight games to punch their ticket in the state tournament as a challenge that they were more than ready for and got hot at the right time to do so.The first game in the double header for the Area 5 Class C District Championship was on July 25 and it was a battle as Wilber and Geneva were neck-and-neck with inning. Offensively both teams were nearly matched, Wilber finished with nine hits and Geneva with 10. However, Wilber was able to show some great defense to persevere and keep hope alive by taking the first game with a victory of 4-2.Coming away with multiple hits was Jack Zimmermam and Coy Rosentreader as each contributed two. Rosentreader had two hits being doubles, and Zimmerman provided one RBI as well.Leading the way with RBI was Tyson Kreshel, who brought in one of his two RBI with a double in the first inning to kick the night off. Carter Skelba, Ozzie Smith, Carson Radcliff and Caden Parham each had one hit as well. If there was any doubt that Wilber could must enough offense to get another win. That doubt was washed away fast as Wilber would score eight runs in the first inning, three in the second, and two in the fourth to run-rule their way into definitively punching their ticket for the State Championship.In the second game, Wilber had their eyes ready as the team drew six walks, and racked up 10 hits with Ozzie Smith and Jack Zimmermam e leading the way with multiple hits. Zimmerman going two-for-three with one RBI, and two runs scored. Ozzie Smith went two-for-four with one of those hits being a double and had himself one RBI as well.Joining the hit parade was Carter Skeleba, Nick Jacobson, Carson Radcliff, Coy Rosentreader, Tyson Kreshal and Aven Smith. Jacobson was on the mound for Wilber getting the win as he gave up four hits and one run over five innings while striking out three and walking only one.As the state tournament began on July 29, Wilber ran into trouble and found themselves on thin ice but thriving under the pressure as they suffered a first round loss in Class C State Baseball with a final score of 2-10 against Malcolm on Saturday but were able to survive elimination by pulling off the close 3-1 victory against Pender on Sunday. The second round was a pitcher’s duel where both teams combined for a total of five hits.Tyson Kreshel started on the mound for Wilber surrendering one hit and zero runs over three innings, able to strike six and walk four to then be relieved by Nick Jacobson. Jacobson in relief went two and one-thirds innings giving up only one hit, no walks, but striking out three.Carson Radcliff and Jack Zimmermam each contributed the lone hits for Wilber as their three runs came in the first inning.With that victory Wilber moved on to go against Security First Regulators on Monday (July 31) with the opportunity to advance to semi-finals. Wilber was able to keep the momentum on their side as they live on with a 10-2 victory. The team able to get eight hits with Tyson Kreshel and Aven Smith leading the way going two for three. Coy Rosentreader, Ozzie Smith, Nick Jacobson, and Carson Radcliff each contributed one hit as well. Smith and Kreshel each came away with multiple RBI as Ozzie Smith led the team with three and Kreshel came away with two RBI as well. Ozzie Smith was on the mound taking the win as they would go six innings allowing five hits, two runs, with one earned, three walks and six strikeouts. Wilber would meet Malcolm in a rematch from the first round as they squared off Tuesday, August 1 with the opportunity at the state championship on the line.
