Wilber Woman Accused of Burglary

Bailey A. Sturm, age 23, of Wilber, was arraigned in Jefferson County Court via webcam on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, from the Jefferson County Jail. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.Sturm is charged with burglary, a class 2A felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison, and possession of burglar's tools, a class 4 felony punishable by two years in prison and a $10,000 fine. She was also charged with two misdemeanors, theft by unlawful taking and theft by receipt of stolen property, each punishable by six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.According to the arrest affidavit, on December 4 of this year, the sheriff's office received a call from a Fairbury resident, “who advised that several locked outbuildings had been broken into and fuel had been stolen.”On December 5, the reporting parting called again, “and advised the property had been burglarized again.”Sturm was arrested on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, near the intersection of 6th and C Streets.Bond was originally set at $100,000 (10 percent). The judge later lowered the bond to $25,000 (10 percent) but the defendant said she was still unable to pay.According to Sturms' attorney, Public Defender Scott Gropp, the state had screened the defendant for pretrial release with an ankle monitor but had been having difficulty finding a place for her to stay. Gropp therefore asked for a PR (Personal Recognizance) bond.Judge Bauer denied the motion for a PR bond, noting that the defendant has family in Texas, “I think there is some flight risk.”Another hearing is scheduled for January 11, 2023.
