Woman Accused of Stealing from Cars is Arraigned

A woman accused of multiple thefts from vehicles in Fairbury was arraigned in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. The defendant appeared via webcam, in the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.Ramona Ruth Jones, age 56, of Fairbury, is charged with theft of property with a value of greater that $5,000, a class 2A felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.On Friday, June 30, at 9:30 a.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were notified of a subject that had been seen getting into vehicles near the downtown square near the courthouse in Fairbury. Numerous items were found missing from different vehicles during the initial investigation. After locating surveillance footage in the area, the deputies were able to identify the suspect on the video from previous contacts. Numerous deputies conducted a search of the area and were able to locate the female at 11:37 a.m. near the intersection of 10th and E Streets in Fairbury.According to the Warrantless Arrest Affidavit, “After placing Ramona into custody several items were located on her person including cash, checks made out to 3rd Street Auto, several registrations to vehicles, multiple bank and debit cards that did not belong to Ramona, as well as insurance cards to multiple vehicles.”Jones was taken into custody and booked into the Jefferson County Jail.At a previous hearing, Public Defender Scott Gropp was assigned to represent Jones. However, due to a conflict of interest, Gropp asked to withdraw and a new attorney, Dillon J. O'Doherty, was assigned to the case.Bond had been set at $3,000 (10 percent). Jones said she was not able to pay any bond. If she was released, she said, “I promise to show up.”Jones also indicated she was attempting to get into a halfway house in Beatrice. County Attorney Joseph Casson said he would not oppose a modification of the bond as long as it included a stipulation requiring the defendant to immediately enter a halfway house.Another hearing is scheduled for August 16.
