Wymore Approves New Head Start Facility

By Gordon HopkinsThe Wymore City Council held a special hearing to consider a special use permit for a new building for the Head Start program Wednesday evening, April 2, 2025.Head Start is a national program that provides free comprehensive early childhood education services in a classroom setting.The program serves children ages three to five and their families who fall within the poverty guidelines or other selection criteria. People who qualify may do so based on income, disability, and a number of other qualifying factors. Blue Valley Community Action (BVCA) is receiving grants in the amount of $3.5 million for the construction of Head Start buildings in Wymore and Geneva, $1.9 million will go toward constructing a new Head Start building in Geneva and $1.6 million will go toward a new facility in Wymore. The grants were first announced in October of 2024.Because the building requires a special use permit, the public hearing was held to allow citizens to give input.No one spoke against the proposal at the meeting.The new building will be located at West C and South 17th Streets, adjacent to the south of BVCA’s existing apartment building complex. Trevor Watson with Architecture Etcetera, representing the design team for the project, spoke at the meeting, “We’re looking at a 4,400 square foot facility.”“We’ll have sidewalks around the building, and then we’ll have our main entrance along the west side of the building, which would be South 17th Street. And then the rear yard would be the fenced in playground area for the for the kids,” said Watson. “ So, it’s a fully kind of secured space.”Jefferson County Commissioner Mark Schoenrock, who also serves on the BVCA board, described the new building as “ desperately needed.”“Great news!” Schoenrock told FJN upon learning of the approval. “This new facility will be a huge step forward!”
