Wymore Electric Rate Increase Gets Second Reading

At a meeting on Wednesday, March 6, the Wymore City Council held the second reading of an ordinance that would increase electric rates by eight percent in 2024.An electric rate study was completed for the City of Wymore by JK Energy Consulting, LLC, based in Smithfield. The purpose of the study was to review the financial performance of the city's electric utility and develop rates that reflect the cost of service. The study recommended an additional increase eight percent in 2025. A motion to raise rates requires three readings at council meetings before it can be implemented.A single member of the public spoke in opposition to the ordinance at the meeting. Duane Franzen told the council, “I think that's little steep, but that's my opinion. I think we're a poor community. Maybe four percent, not eight percent.”“That's only on your electric,” noted Wymore Superintendent Tim Sedlacek. “If you break it down. It's not as bad as some people originally think it is.” After the meeting, Franzen went to social media to encourage others to attend the next meeting. On Facebook, he posted, “It’s my understanding that we will see our electric bills increase as soon as May. Make a long story short…without your voice about this increase we as a community maybe could have stopped this increase. The third reading will be at the next city council meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, March 20, 2024.”
