Wymore Moves Forward with Water System Improvement Project

The City of Wymore is preparing to implement a water system improvement project. The city council voted unanimously to go out for bid on the project at a meeting Thursday evening, January 2, 2025.The project will replace approximately 12 blocks of six inch water lines with eight inch water lines. Many of these are lead-lined or rely on lead connections. The project will replace 4,471 linear feet (LF) of water lines, replacing 85 LF of six inch water lines, exchange 21 cross intersections with newly sized junctions (six to eight inch), replace nine fire hydrants, abandon two service lines that are no longer utilized, replacing the existing service line two inch service line to the high school with a four inch line, install a water meter at the high school, replacing and adding 1,480 LF of residential service lines, removing and replacing approximately 200 square yards of concrete walks and street surfaces where water lines are constructed and reconnecting 52 water meters. Water line replacement will take place along three segments: north/south along 11th Street from C Street to M Street, east/west for one block along M Street from 11th to 10th Street, and north/south along 10th Street from M Street to L Street.The City of Wymore will continue to own and operate the municipal water system as well as maintain the facilities. The total project area covers approximately 12 blocks. All easements and rights-of-ways are either owned or have been secured by the city and are surrounded primarily by residential properties. Project impacts may include temporary road closures, noise, and dust during construction. The city will notify businesses, residents, and emergency services of all road closures and provide alternative routes. All construction activities will be scheduled during normal business hours to minimize disruption.The total Project costs are estimated at $756,394, including $25,000 for general administration and $5,000 for construction management. Funding sources include a Nebraska Department of Economic Development Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) of $480,000 and a local match of $276,394 provided by the City. The matching funds will be sourced from city’s general fund, and are unobligated and readily available.According to the project description presented at the city council meeting, “The project will primarily benefit low-to-moderate-income (LMI) residents by improving local infrastructure and enhancing the overall quality of life in the community. No residents, businesses, or farms will be displaced as a result of the project activities. Construction is anticipated to be completed within thirty (30) months.”
