Wymore Police Chief Resigns

By Gordon HopkinsThe City of Wymore is once again without a police department.At a meeting the evening of Wednesday, June 5, 2024, the Wymore City Council accepted the resignation of Wymore Police Chief Bobby Martinez, just 10 months after he started on the job. In his resignation letter, Martinez wrote, “Serving as the Chief of Police and the sole officer in our town has been an incredibly challenging yet rewarding experience. When I took on this role, I understood the responsibilities and the impact I could make on our community. However, the reality of being the only officer in town has proven to be far more demanding than I initially anticipated. The constant on-call nature of the job and the lack of support have begun to take a significant toll on my mental health and well-being. This strain has also impacted my family, who have had to endure the consequences of my absence and stress.” Chief Martinez was the city’s only law enforcement officer, although he had been attempting to hire more officers.“One of the most daunting challenges has been recruiting quality candidates to join our police department. Despite my best efforts, the task of finding individuals who are both qualified and willing to serve in our small community has been exceedingly difficult. I acknowledge that I underestimated the complexities and obstacles associated with this recruitment process, which has only added to the burden of my responsibilities,” wrote Martinez. “After much reflection, I have come to the difficult decision that I must prioritize my health and my family’s well-being. It has become clear that I need to seek a position that offers a more balanced lifestyle and allows for greater family time. This decision has not been made lightly, and it is one that fills me with both sadness and hope for the future.I believe that with the right resources and a renewed focus on recruitment, the city can find a capable individual to lead the police department and continue to serve the community with dedication and integrity.” Effective immediately, 911 calls will be handled by the Gage County Sheriffs Department until further notice. Gage County Sheriff’s Office needs to be dispatched for all calls for service for all state law violations occurring within the corporate limits of the City of Wymore. The Gage County Sheriff’s Office will also be dispatched for all calls for service involving dangerous dog violations (dog bite cases) under state law as well. Calls for service for nuisance violations (junked motor vehicles, weeds, litter, dilapidated dwellings,dogs at large, etc.) under the Wymore Municipal Code shall be reported to the Wymore City Office by emailing the calls for service to the City Clerk, Janet Riensche, cityclerk@cityofwymore.com, City Treasurer Krystal Rutti citytreasurer@cityofwymore.com and Mayor Collin Meints at mayor@cityofwymore.com.
