Wymore Seeks Federal Charges in Flag Thefts

The Wymore Police Department is seeking the public's help in identifying and locating a suspect in the theft of flags from the Wymore Post Office. The flags were taken from the flagpole.On Monday, January 22, 2024, Wymore Police Chief Bobby Martinez posted an image from a security camera on Facebook and wrote, “Need the community’s help in identifying this person. He is wanted in connection with the theft of an American and POW/MIA flags from the post office if you know who this is please call 402-223-4080 or (G)age county crime stoppers at 402-228-4343. Now as a veteran I can tell you this doesn’t sit right with me, so any help would be greatly appreciated.”On Tuesday, Chief Martinez posted a clearer image of the suspect.According to Martinez, this individual is also suspected of unplugging all the buses at Southern District High School that same night.The Wymore Post Office Postmaster, Nina Coburn Oestreich, offered the thief a 24-hour “grace period” to return the flags. On Friday, January 19, Oestreich posted to Facebook, “If you happen to be the one to have taken them or have access to them-feel free to return them without any repercussions within the next 24 hours… you can even put them inside our collection box.”The “grace period” came and went without contact from the thief or return of the flags and the matter was turned over to the police department.Mail and post offices normally come under federal jurisdiction. Therefore, per Chief Martinez, “I have reached out to the Nebraska Attorney General's Office and will be seeking federal charges for the theft of the flags.”
