Wymore Whistle Stays

By Gordon HopkinsThe Wymore City Council voted unanimously to keep blowing the Wymore whistle, despite the objections of some residents.For many years, a siren in Wymore has been activated every day at 8 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. It is unrelated to any emergency sirens that go off in case of fire, tornadoes, natural disasters or other emergencies.A Wymore resident, Eric Hagood, spoke to the Wymore City Council on Wednesday, June 7, asking for the siren to be silenced, “What about my hearing? I mean, at this point, who's liable for it? You guys continue on. There is no reason to blow that whatsoever. None. None, other than an emergency.”A letter signed by five citizens was submitted to the council. However, each member of the council indicated they had been contacted by well over five people each who wanted the whistle to continue blowing.This is not the first time the city has had this debate. Last year, the whistle was silent while it was in need of repair. The council met at that time to discuss whether to repair the whistle or retire it. In the end, the council voted to repair the whistle, citing public support.City councilperson Neil VanBoening noted that he was originally opposed to repairing the whistle because of the cost but acquiesced.“It was hard for me to vote for it because I was like, save the money,” VanBoening. “But that was what the people wanted.”The council voted and, once again, opted unanimously to keep blowing the whistle.
