1928Water was turned into the new water tower near 16th and E streets, and the former standpipe just east of 11th and D streets, was torn down.George W. Hansen sold the first story of his brick building on the east side of the square to Roy B. Steele, who already owned the second story. It was occupied by the Uhley and Diller Clothing Store. Along with Steele's building to the north, it had been damaged by fire June 15. Hansen received $7,500 beside the $1,000 paid him by his insurance company.1931Wymore's lead in the Blue Valley League and their winning streak of five consecutive games came to an end when they were defeated by Wilbur. The ground was somewhat soggy from a heavy rain in the morning and it was hard to judge a ball on the ground, many of them making bad hops.The long-awaited consolidation of the Blue Springs and Wymore telephone exchanges was completed. New equipment was placed in Blue Springs, which took the place of some that had been in services for more than 30 years. The lines had all been exchanged for new poles, wires and subsets.1933“Steak cut from fancy corn-fed beef” was selling at 10 cents a pound in local stores; pork chops at the same price. The wheat price had increased in a year from 30 cents to $1 a bushel; the price of corn was up only 50 percent.1938The council received a pro-posal to landscape McNish Park as a Works Progress Administration project. The 12 acres included the five acres of the former Highland Park, plus land acquired through proceeds of the Sam and Sylvia McNish estate. Jimmie Davis, xylophone, and Bob Garrett, tumbling, won amateur night prizes at the Bonham Theater.1942The explosion of an oil stove in the cream room of Paul Stark's grocery store at Reynolds resulted in complete destruction and constituted a temporary threat to the entire town as embers drifted over housetops. Loss in the fire was estimated at $7,000 by Stark, who indicated insurance amounting to $1,300 was carried on the building and stock.1948Mrs. E.B. Ackerman was installed president of the Fair-bury American Legion Auxiliary chapter succeeding Letha McLean. Other officers were Mmes. Hugh Graul, Mabel Colver, Foster Helvey, Bob Kautzman, Howard Leonard, George Burger, Louis Likens and Claude Reynolds.Over 250 guests honored Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Humphrey of Daykin on their 35th anniversary and his 35 years as a physician in that town.1958Dayle Williamson, Jefferson County Extension Agent, resigned to become secretary of the Nebraska Soil and Water Conservation Committee.At the 25th reunion of FHS class of 1933. Robert V. Denney was toastmaster. Faculty members of that era present as guests were W.E. Scott, Ruth Hein Mueller of Hanover, Kansas, and Evelyn Foote Lynch.Veteran volunteer firefighters were honored by department members. Some of the group had more than 20 years' service. They were Chief George Mackay, Assistant Chief Con Chancellor, Ralph Smart, Luther Furrow, Norbert Bauer, Fred Huss Jr., Harold Saathoff, Corwin Stauss and Ward Lesher.1963A new motel was under construction at the south edge of Wymore. The owners were Art and Betty Benda.1964A new ordinance was passed by the Wymore City Council to prohibit waste water from air conditioners to drain into the sewer system.1968First 1968-crop wheat was brought in from the Harold Junker farm.Western School District patrons approved an exchange with the Meridian District. Meridian Grades 7 and 8 were to attend classes at Western; Western senior high school pupils would attend classes at Western; Western senior high school pupils would attend Meridian classes at Tobias. At that time, other Meridian classes met at Daykin and Alexandria.Ebsen Construction Co. of Hooper was given a contract by the Army Corps of Engineers to build a flood control levee along the Little Blue River west and south of Fairbury.1978Mrs. Roy McCord was installed regent of Quivera Chapter DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). Established in 1902, the chapter in 1978 had two members who had belonged for over 50 years, Berneice Powell, 53 years and Pauline Nuckolls, 52 years.The Rev. Joe Bennett was appointed pastor of the Fairbury Methodist Church and the Rev. David Whitfield minister of education.A “small tornado” struck buildings at "Reno No. 2" south of Fairbury near the state line and demolished the former Albia brick school building a short distance away.Steve Hunter was named SCC-Fairbury basketball coach.1988Werner Carl Niemeier was struck by lightning while checking an irrigation system on a farm two miles east of Plymouth on Highway 4. The rain, accompanied by hail and wind, was the first after nearly a month-long drought. Measurements varied from 4.75 to 5.10 inches within Endicott.Joe Payne retired after 30 years as Steele City postmaster.1998Gerald Canning, longtime Fairbury businessman and community supporter, died June 20, 1998, in a Lincoln hospital. He owned and operated Canning Truck Service Inc., a business. Canning started in 1935 when he was 19. He started the business with one truck and made daily trips to Omaha for a $1 a day.Members of the First United Presbyterian Church of Fairbury voted June 28 to contract with R.L. Fauss Builders Inc of Fremont to construct a new church at 23rd and H streets.
