I recently attended my high school reunion and let’s just say it has been a few years since I left the hallowed halls of my alma mater.I grew up in a town of nearly 30,000 people and had a graduating class of nearly 300. Operations Director Jennifer Lewis had a graduating class under 15. Being around rural communities for many years the annual alumni weekend is nothing new.However, mentioning this at my reunion left for some head scratches. It is a bit unheard of in larger schools to get together every year. Some go every 10 years, some every five. Some rural districts go every single year and really whoop it up for a big year like a 25th or 50th. This sort of bond in smaller schools is amazing to see and I came to appreciate what these smaller schools share in common: a pride of not only the school but the bonds shared through living in that smaller community their whole lives. Some students go kindergarten through high school with the exact same kids, with maybe a few coming to the district at certain points, but smaller schools have a larger instance of lifelong bonds and connections. I believe there was one person at the reunion I went elementary,junior and senior high with at the reunion.This is just another lesson small town life can teach all of us.
