1889There were no dissenting votes as the new town of Daykin approved $900 in bonds, for a schoolhouse.The first newspaper in Jansen, The Advertiser, was printed in both German and English.The Fairbury Democrat began publishing. The publisher was Charlie Curten.Peter Jansen arranged for a special train weekly over the Rock Island for shipment of 7,000 sheep to the market at Chicago.A train of 27 carloads took fat cattle to Chicago for Fairbury shippers McLucas Bros., Robinson Bros. McCord, Gage, Hughes, Diller, Hoppe and Cramb.1909A “government expert” came to Fairbury to supervise building a mile of sand and clay road, which would cost the county. The distance was shortened to a half-mile, for the city limits to the cemetery.1919The Fairbury City Council passed an ordinance raising city salaries, with mayor, $200; clerk, $600; councilmen, $100; treasurer, $100 (down by $100), and water and light commissioner, $1,800.F.R. Pettit retired from the Pettit & Moon Marble Works, which became Frank. A. Moon 81 Son with Charles R. Moon a new member of the firm following his return from World War 1 service.1929“Talkies” were coming to the Bonham Theater. Manager Ted Kempkes announced remodeling and new equipment costing $20,000 to bring sound to the screen.1939Erma Rempel of No. 74 won both oral and written county spelling contests. Runners-up were Robert Sproul of Daykin, oral, and Esther Roelfs of District No. 74, written.Steps were taken to form a Ban Johnson Baseball League here. Players 18-21 years old weren't paid salaries but only expenses.Vincent McAndrews was to be golf pro at the Fairbury Country Club. Club officers were F.A. Moon, president, Leland Krause and R.B. Felton.1942Harry Thomas of Jansen had the first national draft lottery number from Jefferson County. Others in the first 10 were Arthur R. Morris, Jack N. Kinman, Guy E. Bell, Harry J. Gately, Lloyd J. Henry, Roscoe P. Luce and Duncan B. Ruble Jr., all of Fairbury. Emil Weise and John E. Kruse of Jansen also received numbers. Only one of the first 30 was under 30 years of age.The Mahaska State Bank closed. The First National Bank of Fairbury took over its notes and paid off the depositors of the sound institution.1942 At a program on March 24, 1942, Anna Margaret Aasen was crowned FFA Queen. Upon conclusion of a small program the curtain closed and reopened with a patriotic setting on the stage. A large red, white and blue “V” was placed in the center of the stage with the queen at the center of the “V,” the queen's attendants and FFA officers are standing on either side of the “V.”1952Girl Scouts celebrated their 40th anniversary nationally and their 20th in Jefferson County. The Golden Rod troop had organized here in 1932 with Mrs. Lewis Carter as captain and Mrs. Grace Hoppe, lieutenant. Troop committee members were Mmes. R.E. Deadman, R.A. Gibson, H.E. Potter, Robert Shupe and Frank Simpson.The Republican national ballot for the primary election listed 33 candidates for national convention delegates/alternates.1972Mrs. Berry Sass and Mrs. Cheryl Chilen were named “Outstanding Fairbury Mrs. Jaycees.”1989Fairbury High School prom candidates were Dean Schmidt, Angie Hoins, Chris Renner, Beth Meyer, Julie Cote, Jed Martin, Edie Southwick, Tracy Owens, Karen Catherall and Burke Bundy.Crews installed the new civil defense siren in the alley behind Fairbury Printing and Office Supply. The siren was to be used in the event of a nuclear disaster, tornado warnings, peak period warnings and the event of a chemical spill.1999The Jefferson County Historical Society and the Diller Historical Society joined forces to preserve Diller's history. Junior Division winners in the 4-H Speech Contest were Brittny Barber, first; Aaron Giaesemann, second; and Heidi Phillips, third.The Fairbury Chamber of Commerce and the Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation moved to a new location at 518 E Street, the former Peoples Natural Gas office.Lisa Hermsmeier won high senior lady honors after winning a shoot-off over teammate Amber Ruhnke at the Lincoln Izaak Walton gun club.Nebraska women's head basketball coach Paul Sanderford was the guest speaker at the first ever Diller-Odell Griffin Athletic Banquet.
