1882The new Fairbury bank was called Farmers & Merchants. Later it was changed to The First National.1884The Democratic Convention nominated Grover Cleveland and The Fairbury Gazette described him as, “A slick looking fellow, dressed in a gray suit and sporting a cane and white hat, wearing a Cleveland badge and carrying a small grip.”1894The Fairbury Gun Club was organized.1904Prof. M. H. Barringer moved from Beatrice and started the Fairbury Business College.1914A new Fairbury ordinance prohibited movies being shown on Sundays. The measure was preventative, as no movies had been shown on a Sunday until that time.1917The first paving put in Fairbury was watched carefully, two batches of sand being replaced and one piece of poor curbing being torn out and replaced.1922The Endicott bank went into the hands of a receiver after several changes of ownership.1932Competing for attention with the municipal band on the north side of the square was a loud speaker radio report of the Sharkey-Schmeling fight.1934A drought relief program was worked out for farmers. The government would buy cattle which were not worth feeding, paying higher prices than regular buyers would pay.Cattle hard to dispose of were being bought by the federal government, one phase of a drought relief program for farmers.Alfalfa hay was so scarce it was bringing $10 a ton in the windrow.A flock of sheep placed in Crystal Springs Park to do the mowing were too choosy: weeds continued to flourish.Fairbury food prices were; lemons 23 cents a dozen, bananas four pounds 25 cents crated, watermelons 4 cents a pound, prunes two pounds 19 cents, margarine 9 cents a pound, navy beans five pounds $1.93, rice three pounds 15 cents and beef roasts and bacon, 10 cents a pound.1944C.J. Bachoritch succeeded Bill Nuckolls as Rotary Club president.Pvt. Charles Kroetsching died of combat wounds in Italy.To encourage farm storage of wheat in a time of railroad car and elevator storage shortages, the loan rate in 1944 wheat was advanced 7 cents a bushel, to $1.40.1950Emil Dux, operating a farm south of Gladstone owned by Harry Schenk, had nine acres of wheat on former alfalfa ground that produced 575 bushels, 65 bushels per acre.There was considerable flooding locally after 7.65 inches of rain between 11 p.m. and the following 4 a.m.Officers of the Fairbury Jayettes were Mrs. R.L. Cross as Pastor of the Fairbury and Steele City Presbyterian congregation was held at the Fairbury church.2000Several local volunteers took time out of their schedules to help fix up Camp Jefferson grounds and facilities, including such things as rewiring, roofing and painting.2001Alicia Graybill was named director of the Fairbury Public Library.Endicott Clay went undefeated to win the 15-team, 14-and-under Class C girls softball district tournament played in Seward.2005A buffalo sculpted by local artist, Thom Hunt, was displayed all week at the Jefferson County Fair in the merchants building before being relocated to Conrad Park, located on the southwest side of the square.
