Fairbury is in a tight spot with its water situation. There are quantity and quality issues.The silver lining for the region, however, is that Fairbury is going through this now, as I can see many villages and towns going through this in the upcoming years.Fairbury has formed a water sourcing committee and that group is searching out new technologies that could help alleviate the quality issue.Finding the quantity is just how things are sometimes, you either have a lot or you don’t, with factors like annual rainfall coming into play. Back in the day, people wandered around out in a field with a stick, trying to find a good water source. Today, there are far more advanced technologies at play.All of the villages and towns in the region should form a committee and stay vigilant on water quality and quantity. Fairbury is trying to solve a lot of mysteries all at once and could be up against a ticking clock as far as finding a solid source for years to come.This conundrum could be facing several local entities and then it is a scramble to claim your piece of an ever shrinking pie. Before you know it, the resource of water has literally dried up.The biggest problem for some of the smaller villages and towns will be money. Grant money is available, but someone has to be able to write the grant. Many villages are run by people doing it for little to no compensation and will have to find time to write a grant, or find the funds to pay someone to write a grant. Then there is the sticky wicket of matching funds. A multi-million dollar project can be secured, if the village has matching funds. Money is tight all over for many small villages and this may not be possible, putting funds aside now may be prudent.As for the City of Fairbury, diligence is the key. The water sourcing committee has some leads and needs to continue to expedite those leads and figure out a timeline once the problem is solved, just how long they have until this process needs to be started all over again to secure water for citizens.This is a problem facing many municipalities across the country and once the problem is solved, I would keep the committee around to continue to flesh out ideas and get that timetable set.
