Daykin Robbery Nets More Than $50 Grand

A theft from a well-known bar and grill in Daykin resulted in losses estimated at well over $50,000 in value in cash and equipment, including gaming machines.On Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 1:34 p.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to a burglary that occurred at the Road Runner Bar and Grill, 705 Francis Street. The burglary occurred sometime during the previous night after the establishment closed.Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the owners were notified that someone gained entry into the building and targeted the gaming machines within the establishment. According to the sheriff’s office, the investigation found that three gambling gaming machines, the pool table, and dart board were all broken into and the money removed. A gaming ticket/money redemption machine was also forcefully removed and missing from the establishment.The total amount of cash between the gaming machines and the ticket redemption machines is estimated near $19,000.00.The stolen ticket redemption machine has an estimated value between $35,000 to $40,000. The estimated cost of the damage to the other machines is not known at this time.A string of similar burglaries have hit establishments in rural Lancaster County with similar gaming machines.Victims include Traditions Pub in Sprague and the Hallam Station in Hallam.In addition, there were two attempted break-ins in Denton, at the Super C convenience store and Denton Daily Double.However, it has not yet been confirmed that the Daykin burglary is related to the other incidents.The Road Runner’s loss occurred less than a year after the business reopened under new ownership, having been shuttered for several years.The business was closed over three days to allow for the investigation and removal of the damaged equipment but reopened Tuesday, February 13. The manager, Lori Yantze-Knobel, explained, “We had to wait for them to get the busted machines out, because I did not want any patrons or their children in that area. We were closed for the simple fact I was looking out for the patrons didn’t want anybody to get hurt on that stuff.” Yantze-Knobel said this setback will not keep the Road Runner from business as usual, “Last night, we did go with our Valentine’s party. We had a nice crowd in here for last night. And we had good crowds at noon, for our dinners. So, I’m sure we’re going to bounce back.”Yantze-Knobel added, “I just want to thank the patrons that have continued to keep coming in and visiting with us and their concerns about the business.”This is an ongoing investigation at this time and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is working with other agencies as well at the Nebraska Gaming Commission.
