DUI Suspect Accepts Plea Deal

Randy M. Weston, 30, of Fairbury was scheduled to appear in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, February 23, for a suppression hearing. Instead, his attorney, Public Defender Scott Gropp, announced that a plea agreement has been reached with the state.

The defendant was charged with multiple counts: First offense DUI (driving under the influence of alcohol), a class W misdemeanor punishable by seven to 60 days in jail, a $500 fine and six months driver’s license revocation; obstructing a Peace Officer, a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by one year in jail and a $1,000 fine; driving without proof of insurance, a class 2 misdemeanor that carries a possible penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine; and refusing to submit to a preliminary breath test, a class 5 misdemeanor that carries a $100 fine.
Weston was also charged with multiple infractions, including speeding, possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession an open container of alcohol.
In accordance with the plea agreement, Weston pleaded guilty to the DUI. The remaining charges were dismissed by the State.
The charges stemmed from a traffic stop that occurred on October 1, 2021.
The defendant asked the court for probation. Sentencing is scheduled for April 6, 2022. The defendant remains free on a $3,500 bond (10 percent) at this time.
