Evelyn Marie (Durfee) Georgi

Evelyn Marie (Durfee) Georgi was born August 10, 1934, to Lawrence and Verna (Schuetz) Durfee at their home in Rulo, Ne. She was the third child out of 7. Evelyn passed away surrounded by family at her home on February 19, 2023. Evie went to school in Rulo, NE until the 3rd grade, when the family moved to a farm south of Dawson, NE. She then attended a country school called Honey Creek. She started playing volleyball in the 9th grade and played till she was in the 11th grade when she dropped out of school. Doctors had told her she had to quit volleyball or get her appendix out, so she quit school. Never in her lifetime did she ever have her appendix out. Growing up she went to Sunday school in Rulo and south Dawson. As she got older, she was baptized and confirmed at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Falls City, NE and later became a member of the American Lutheran Church in Fairbury. When she was about 12, she helped ladies in their homes: cooking and cleaning up dishes after serving the farmer and his workers. (Her Dad being one of them), She worked for 25 cents an hour, later became a waitress at a local cafe on Saturdays and made $2.00 for 8 hours. As the years went by, she met the love of her life, Lynn Georgi. Lynn came and worked on the farm as well, and this is where their story began. Lynn and Evie were married on September 27, 1953. A son, Michael and a daughter Cindy were born to this union. After they were married, they moved to California as this is where Lynn was stationed in the Navy. He was overseas when Mike was born and never saw him till, he was 3 months old. After finishing his time with the Navy, they moved to Fairbury where Cindy was then born. Evie worked for her parents in Fairbury at The Spot cafe and bar. Later she babysat for several families, then worked for Swingsters coat factory for 25 years. When she retired she worked part-time at Lambert Vet Supply for a short while. Over the years the family did a lot of camping, where they made so many friends. They also met many from going to dances and people that came into The Spot. She enjoyed gardening, canning, working in the yard, sewing, crocheting, embroidering, quilting, and cooking. There was one thing that was very important to Evie and Lynn and that was their family. The 4 grandkids came along and were truly a blessing to them. Evie has had so much fun with the 7 Great Grandkids as well. Her favorite thing was to snuggle and rock them. Evie’s love for family expands from just her kids and grandkids. She took over her mom’s job of having family dinners, Thanksgiving and Christmas being her specialties. She would invite her siblings and their families, which was quite a few people over the years. There was always plenty of food. Plus, if you didn't have a place to go, you were welcome too. Her specialties were her homemade pies. Crusts made with lard and whatever kind you wanted. She was truly the best cook. Survivors: Son Mike and Denise (Nespor) Georgi of Hebron NE; Daughter Cindy of Fairbury NE; Grandchildren Amber Georgi of Beatrice NE; Nick and Saril (Hunt) Georgi of Fairbury NE; Matt and Lisa (Rosener) Wilson of Lincoln NE; and Tyler and Mikaela (Hamm) Rosener of Fairbury NE. Great Grandchildren Hartley, Colter, and Berkley Rosener; Colette and Gwyneth Wilson; and Calvin and Dawson Georgi; Sisters Ruth (Durfee) Johnson of Fairbury NE, and Shirley (Durfee) Fritz of Falls City, NE. Sister-in laws Gayle Durfee of Fairbury NE and Andrea Durfee of Lincoln NE. Brother-in-law Gary Georgi of California; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Evelyn is preceded in death by her Husband Lynn Georgi, Father and Mother Lawrence and Verna (Schuetz) Durfee, Father and Mother-in-law Henry and Bernice (Iliff) Georgi, Son-in-law Jerry Rosener, Sisters Mae (Durfee) and Emil Sokol, Geri (Durfee) and Chester Nixon, Brothers Lawrence and Edward Durfee, Niece Judy Rae Nixon, Brother-in-laws James Johnson, Roy Miller, and Harold Fritz. Services will be Thursday, February 23, 2023, at 1:30 at the Presbyterian Church in Fairbury. The family will greet friends Wednesday evening from 6 – 7 at the Funeral Home.
