Fairbury City Museum Roof In Need Of Repair

By Gordon HopkinsThe Fairbury City Council voted to repair damage to the Fairbury City Museum.Earlier this year Fairbury experienced a significant hailstorm that caused severe damage to the Museum roof. The Museum has an elastomeric roof coating, which not all roofing companies are able to install. According to a memorandum from city clerk Erin Reimer, this made getting quotes difficult.Despite this, the museum received three quotes for consideration. The bids included roof replacement, gutter work, replacement of skylights and other repairs to buildings on the grounds, including the old schoolhouse and a shed.The bids received were: • Chapell Roofing: $59,795.13,with tax removed from bid; • Prellwitz Exteriors: $ 60,685.48; • BB Roofing of Nebraska: $82,300.00.The city did turn in an insurance claim and has received $57,251.33, with an additional recoverable depreciation amount of $1,027.21 once repairs are completed, for a total of $58,278.35 to repair the damages.Mick Suey of the Museum Board spoke to the Fairbury Public Works Committee at a meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 5, and he recommended Prellwitz Exteriors, “One thing that was really important to us was saving the skylights in the museum. Prellwitz said they would be able to do that. The hail caused quite a bit of damage to one of them. It went through both the skylight and then the protective glass. We would like that to be saved.”The public works committee voted to recommend Prellwitz and later the city council met and voted unanimously to accept the bid from Prellwitz.
