More Money Needed For Rock Island Depot Roof

The Jefferson County Historical Society (JCHS) Board has been faced with a challenge of trying to raise enough money to replace the roof at the Rock Island Railroad Depot.With the Depot being a historical building, it must remain at its truest construction. That means the tile used for the roof must be historically accurate, which has proven to be a major stumbling block as the price tag for tiles made from the same clay material is steep. JCHS located tiles made from an alternative material that is less expensive but still similar and historically acceptable.Even with the cheaper tiles, the roof will cost approximately $375,000.00.The Historical Society has been trying to raise the funds for two years. JCHS recently issued a statement, “This last year we had several significant donations from several donors. The Jefferson County Historical Society Board would like to give an extended thank you to these donors.“First, we have Union Bank and Trust that has given back to community with their donation of $5,000. Secondly, there is Kelly Davis. Kelly sponsored a putt-putt golf tournament to help raise money to go directly to the roof. Kelly gave countless hours that are greatly appreciated and a total of $7,100. Third, we have Dwayne Compton, a man that cared enough to give a significant personal donation of $25,000. We would also like to give a special thank you to Ann Austin from Little Rock, Arkansas who has given numerous donations to help make the roof project possible.” There are countless donations that have come into the Jefferson County Historical Society for funds for the roof project.“The Board appreciates every one of those. With such a large amount needed to fund the roof project JCHS is still not able to reach the goal in its entirety.”“The roof is scheduled to be replaced this fall or early winter, hopefully before the area has any significant snow fall.”JCHS is still accepting donations of any amount.
