Fairbury Woman One Of Three Deceased In Suspected Murder-Suicide

A woman from Fairbury was one of three dead in a shooting that law enforcement believes was a murder-suicide that took place in Grand Island Sunday morning.At approximately 2:30 a.m., June 4, Grand Island Police responded to a report of an incident at a residence in the 4100 block of West Arizona Avenue.Hall County Attorney Marty Klein told FJN that Rex Goodell, age 26, shot and killed his wife, Emily Goodell, age 23. Both resided in Lincoln. Emily Goodell was originally from Fairbury. It is unknown at this time why she was in Grand Island.The couple were only recently married and had two children.Hayes Morgheim, age 23, was also killed by Rex Goodell. Klein said, “We don't know at this point in time the exact timeline, so we are not certain who was shot and killed first.”The house where the indictment took place was the home of Morgheim. Klein said, “His parents we’re in the house but we're not confronted and not injured.”Klein noted, “We are continuing to try to investigate to establish what happened what the relationship was between the parties.”“It appears Goodell took his own life when police arrived on the scene, (I am) uncertain as to whether that was going to be his plan or not, but did so when he was still on scene and police arrived before he had the chance to depart,” said Klein.An independent investigation is now being conducted by SCALES (South Central Area Law Enforcement Services), a multi-jurisdictional investigative unit that handles major crime investigations. According to law enforcement, no weapons were fired by police officers.“We will eventually bring this to a grand jury. It's a kind of a gray area,” Klein explained. “Grand jury has to be called when a person is killed while in police custody or while being pursued by police. This gentleman was certainly not going to be allowed to leave this residence. So was he being pursued by police? We're going to treat it as if it was a pursuit and take this to a grand jury.”
