The University of Nebraska is spending $450 million to better Memorial Stadium. My question is, will all of that money make the football team better?Talking football with a friend that follows the ins-and-outs of these situations, they explained that this will give the university an opportunity to make more money. The more money coming in will be put into the football program and recruits will come pouring in to the Huskers.I guess I am a bit odd in my thoughts. I would have spent money on upgrades to help strengthen the volleyball program. The nationally ranked, multiple time national champion, always in the hunt for a national title volleyball team.Adding $450 million to the stadium will get us a mid-ranked, at best, football team that will challenge for a Big 10 title every few years.I think Rhule and his team need to earn this first. I’d have three winning seasons and have a light at the end of the tunnel before pouring funds into the football program.I attended the Louisiana Tech game this season. Nice facilities, stands were packed. The best thing about the day was the fly-over before the game, the pre-game video, the tunnel walk and the halftime performance. All of that was pretty cool, but the actual football was not worth the price of admission. It hasn’t been for decades. My oldest daughter, approaching 20, has never seen us be any good. I told her we were once the Georgia of the college football world, the only proof are old YouTube videos.The volleyball team sold out Memorial Stadium built on performance, skill and a winning attitude. I think they deserve at least $40 million of upgrades.A lounge area, alcohol sales and nicer seats will only give fans the chance to sit in comfort and watch us get our rear ends handed to us by elite programs and struggle to beat low level Division I squads for a while.Will the football team reach national notoriety again? Maybe. We may have some good runs for a while, but to get to the absolute top, like Georgia, or Alabama a few years ago, or Michigan in the next few years, we have to change how we recruit.We could put $450 million into hiring players out of the transfer portal like some teams have done. It has made those squads prime time teams. Then again, we’d be selling our heritage and legacy out in order to do that, but then again, we’re selling alcohol and making the stadium look cool like all the other kids are doing, so maybe that day will come soon.Again, John Cook has built a program on accepting nothing but excellence. There was a day the football team did as well.
