Grader Ditch TrashDear Editor:Our State Road’s Department is to be commended for its efforts in mowing and beautifying our roadsides. In times of drought, the State also often allows roadsides to be swathed and hayed by participating farmers. The problem is pollution-- trash, bottles, plastic bags, and other discarded materials that create scattered debris areas when hit by mowers and swathers. Our state highways and county roads are not garbage or trash disposals. It appears that some feel tossing trash or unwanted items out the car window or leaving it in a parking lot is a convenient way to dispose of unwanted items. Such irresponsible, unaccountable behavior is simply not acceptable and is a disgrace to our town and community. When approaching Fairbury from the north, we see a beautiful water tower with a proud Jeff logo welcoming people to our town and area. What kind of impression are we giving incoming visitors who may be interested in residing in our town or creating a future business with such a menacing display of trash in our grader ditches? I do not see this problem in other area towns. Some will say that those “other” towns don’t have a Walmart. Come on! Walmart is not the problem. The problem is irresponsible people and how they dispose of their trash. Fairbury is fortunate to have Walmart which pays taxes, employs many people, and attracts customers from different areas. We have a pollution problem that will only get worse unless something is done to correct it. In past years, local church youth groups took part in walking the road sides picking up trash as a goodwill project. High school youth have also been involved in making this a project for their organizations. Local civic organizations may also get involved. All with the intent of putting pride back into our town and community. Littering along our highways and county roads is illegal and should be discouraged and reported to our local law enforcement. With cooperation, leadership, and determination we can correct this menacing situation. As Larry the Cable Guy would say, “Let’s get er done.”/s/ Stan Stewart, Fairbury
