Jansen to Hold Special Election in July

The Nebraska Secretary of State will be holding a special election on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 to replace the four board members that have resigned from the Jansen Village Board this year. Deadline for candidates to file is June 13 and June 30 is the deadline for write-in affidavits. See the Special Election noticed on page three.Both board member Kesha Eldridge, whose term was set to expire in 2024, and chairperson Joyce Ambrose, whose term was set to expire in 2026, submitted their resignations on Thursday, May 18. The resignations of Matthew Leatherwood and Stoney Brooks, whose terms were set to expire in 2024, were accepted at the last village board meeting on May 8.Currently only a single board member, Janene Russell, remains.Until a new board is elected, the village remains without a quorum. Without a quorum, the board is no longer able to vote on business.According to Jefferson County Election Commissioner Kris Riggle, “I looked back 50 years in the election records and did not find a village in Jefferson County holding a special election for that purpose. The last time a special election was held in Jefferson County for any reason was in 2017 for the Fairbury Municipal Pool bond.”Riggle indicated the election is expected to cost the village an estimated $3,000.While a special election for a lack of quorum is rare, Jansen has faced the possibility before.The Jansen Village Board consists of five members. A minimum of three are required for a quorum. In 2014, three members of the board submitted resignations. However, their resignations hadn't yet been accepted when a special meeting was held December 13. To get around this, the resignation of one of the board members was not accepted until after two replacements were appointed.
