Don Maclay, Fairbury Schools’ superintendent, was elected president of the 5JC conference of junior colleges.The Nebraska Department of Roads called for bids for 4.8 miles work on Highway 8, Fairbury-Endicott. Four bridges, grading and culverts were included.Fairbury farm market prices included white corn $1.45-47 a bushel, wheat $2.15-17, oats 75-78 cents, milo $2.05-10, butterfat 60 cents and eggs 22 cents a dozen (had been 40 cents a year earlier).1964Soloists for “The Messiah,” to be presented by a community chorus directed by Bob Beetley, were to be Keith Duensing, Dr. Gordon Johnson, Mrs. Darrel Junker, Mrs. Ray Munoz and Mrs. William Nuckolls.Telephone booth coin boxes at 14th and E streets in Fairbury, also at Beatrice, Harbine, Hebron and four other towns were burglarized.1973Mid-America Dairymen of this area elected Howard DeFrain chairman and Rudolph Glaesemann vice chairman and Lea Fairley a director.The Fairbury American Lutheran congregation voted to build a new church. It had been occupying a frame church building, moved in from Western, at Sixth and I streets, since 1948.Beavers were damaging trees along the north side of Crystal Springs Park.A second 300,000-gallon fuel oil storage tank for the municipal power plant was approved by the Fairbury City Council. It would extend the “standby fuel” supply to 2 1/2 months if use of natural gas were to be banned for powerplant use.That happened, and the utilities department had trouble getting natural gas use for “lighting up” its boilers. Later, the gas industry was decontrolled, and abundant reserves were discovered.1984An unconfirmed report said Swingster Jackets had been sold by its owner, Beatrice Foods.A maintenance building at the Fairbury City Park was completed at a cost of $5,200. It provided park employees with a place to work during winter months.1993Jack Williams of Waukee, Iowa, officially began his duties as the interim superintendent at Fairbury High School.Mark Hergott of Gilead competed for the title of National Spokesperson for Agriculture during the 27th National Young Farmer Educational Institute. Hergott was a member of the Jefferson County Young Farmer Chapter.2003Stacy Dein, daughter of Tom and Theresa Dein of Omaha, and granddaughter of Phyllis Jordening of Daykin, graduated from Naval Training Service Command at Great Lakes, Illinois, on November 25, 2003.Flu hit early in 2003, and had a lasting effect on hospitals, health boards and schools in Jefferson County. The Jefferson Community Health Center in Fairbury posted signs at entrances discouraging visits to patients or residents of Gardenside from anyone with signs of illnesses including cough, fever, runny nose or other symptoms.
