PWF Bridge Hopefully To Be Open By Memorial Day

The bridge on the PWF (Pawnee City, Wymore, Fairbury) Road between Highway 103 and the Gage County line was closed for construction effective Wednesday, December 3, 2025. The work is on schedule to be completed and the bridge reopened before the end of May, 2026.
That is according to Jefferson County Highway Engineer Tim Farmer, who updated Jefferson County Commissioners on the project at a meeting on Tuesday, April 7, “Hopefully by Memorial Day weekend.”
T

he bridge is just part of the long-delayed repair of the PWF Road that Jefferson County Commissioners have been working on for many years. Farmer said he hoped work could begin on the remainder of the PWF Road this year, “Hopefully starting this year, with at least grading and culverts.”
The total estimated cost for the PWF project is $12.8 million. Jefferson County will be receiving $8.5 million towards that total cost from federal sources. The rest will need to be paid for by issuing a bond, which the county has authority to do without a public vote.

Commissioner Mark Schoenrock said, “So right now, we were looking at a county board approved bond of somewhere around $4 million.”

The PWF Road project is included in the county’s One-and-Six-Year Road Plan, which was also presented and approved at the meeting on Tuesday.

In 1970, the State of Nebraska initiated a program developed to provide an integrated system of public roads for the state, counties, and municipalities. The Department of Transportation and each county and municipality develop a long-range Six-Year plan of highway, road and street improvements.
