Salute to Boy Scouts

By Don Sheraon First Published February 10, 1970As the United States this week pays well-earned tribute to the Boy Scouts of America, it is timely to take a look at a sort of left-handed compliment paid the Scouts by Pravda, official organ of Soviet Russia.A Tennessee newspaper published what was described as an editorial from Pravda, which proclaimed: “A Pravda survey reveals that an organization called the Boy Scouts is turning American youngsters into hostile, warmongering imperialists. Every boy who is forced to join the Boy Scouts is trained to be a master of all forms of espionage, violence and germ war-fare. He quickly becomes the tool of the ruthless United States government.“At the age of eight or nine, innocent American boys are forcibly herded into an organization called the Cub Scouts, which prepares them for the future foul deeds.“The Cub Scout dictators force the youth to worship the wolf, one of the most vicious and uncivilized of predatory animals.“After three years of servitude in the Cub Scouts, the boys, now howling adolescents, are forced to join the older, more corrupt Boy Scouts. The most deceitful ritual is the shameful 'Court of Honor,' where the young war-mongers are decorated with so-called 'merit badges.' It is here that they receive awards in such insidious fields as 'swimming' (under-water demolition and sabotage); 'path-finding' (counter-espionage); 'pioneering' (exploitation of underdeveloped nations).”There was more to the Pravda piece, but this is enough to demonstrate the high regard Soviet planners have for the Boy Scouts. We say “high regard” because it has been proven time and again that leaders of. the USSR go all-out to downgrade those institutions and individuals they most fear.The wholesome training being received by this country's Boy Scouts will turn out men capable of carrying forward the free world's resistance to the further expansion of Communist aggression. Soviet leaders recognize this fact. Hence, the strong effort to discredit the Boy Scout movement in this country. “America's manpower begins with BOY-POWER” is not an idle phrase, and the Soviets understand its significance.The United States is proud of her Boy Scouts, and during this special week dedicated to them renews the pledge to promote the ideals and objectives of the movement.
