Veterans Memorial on Track for Dedication Memorial Day 2023

The Jefferson County Veterans Memorial in the Fairbury City Park is on track to be completed by Memorial Day weekend. The dedication is scheduled for Monday, May 29, 2023, at 1 p.m.Work is progressing. The fence and poles around the cement pad have been taken down and a security camera is now in place. The concrete blocks go up first, then the actual veteran/donor bricks. A part of the memorial will be a brick wall, with names of veterans engraved in the bricks by Endicott Clay Products. The brick forms have been typed out and delivered to Endicott Clay.The deadline to have a brick engraved in 2023 has passed. Mick Suey of the Fairbury Museum Board explained, “I have received several calls about purchasing bricks. The time has expired for 2023. We needed to give Endicott and Matt time to make, engrave and fire them in time to be installed by Jeff. I will start taking bricks for 2024 after the Fourth of July. Please pass on this info!” The brick wall will be an ongoing process. It will still be possible for people to still donate to have a named brick engraved after the deadline, but in that case it will not be placed until 2024. Every year on Veterans’ Day the museum will send the next batch of names to be engraved onto the brick wall.In addition to the brick wall, there will be installed a flag pole, a foundation stone and a statue, created by local artist Tom Hunt. There is also landscaping to be done.
