LOOKING BACK1871Reports reached Fairbury that trains would be running to Beatrice in two weeks. Previous to that travel was by stagecoach.Another prairie fire occurred near Fairbury, this time along the Blue river bottom doing some damage on the Baker and Olney farms.An effort was being made to secure a license to run a saloon in Fairbury.An advertisement in the Fairbury Gazette offered young nursery peach trees for 10 cents each or $1 per dozen, another ad, eight cents each or $6 per 1,000.1923Whittet Motor Co. of Fairbury offered a 1924 light six Studebaker sedan for $1,550, f.o.b. Factory.1933A shipment of 2,800 pounds of federal pork had been allotted to Jefferson County by Randall Biart, state relief director.Eleven young men and six alternates from Jefferson County went to Fort Crook, Omaha, for physical exams before assignment to the Civilian Conservation Corps, a nationwide program to employ young men on conservation projects, many of these on farms. Already in federal forestry camps were 25 Jefferson County young men.The Red Cross roll call had a Jefferson County goal of 700, $1 memberships. The organization had carried on an extensive relief program; listed 478 needy families locally.American Legion members were forming “vigilance squads” of eight men each to guard against “organized crime.” Five squads were in Fairbury, one each in Daykin, Plymouth, Steele City, Reynolds, Jansen and Gilead.1943Harold L. Spence, 1926-1943 county register of deeds, died. She was born in a log cabin near Rose Creek, daughter of I.N. and Julia Haworth Thompson, for whom the town of Thompson was named.Stewart Earhart was elected president of the United Neighbors Community Club of Steele City.Joe E. Cook, Fairbury Police Chief, was re-elected president of the Nebraska Police Officers Association.1963Edith Kelso received a 50-year membership pin from Vashti chapter. Order of Eastern Star. Robert Jackson and Mrs. Ladd Schwegman were worthy patron and matron of the local OES chapter.The Twin Rivers Conference all-star football team included Fairbury's Jim McCord, tackle, and Gary McCord, guard, seniors; Mike Backer and Mike Hall, half-backs, juniors.1973Mrs. Joyce Robinson resigned after seven years as Fairbury Chamber of Commerce manager.FHS qualifiers for the all-state band of chorus included Julie Junker, Gailynn Kenning, Mary Nutsch and Connie Wendland.Pre-Thanksgiving food prices include turkeys, 59 to 93 cents a pound; ham, 79 cents; 24-ounce pumpkin pies, 39 cents each; celery, 19 cents per large stalk; and cranberry sauce, 16-ounce can, 25 cents.1983The Fairbury Housing Authority honored Ellen Sokolik for five years was head of its governing board.Tri County pupils were to present “You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown.” Cast members included Kurtis Kiburz, Denise Straub, Marie Hart, Sandy Koening, Brad Katz and Denise Zimmerman. Director Jana Miller's student assistants included Eileen Katz and Liz Ronan.1993An official dedication ceremony was held for the Struckman-Baatz Public Library in Western.Lynn Starr of Fairbury was inducted into the Alpha Pi Lambda chapter of Phi The-ta Kappa at Southeast Community College-Lincoln at its fall initiation ceremony.2000World War II veteran Alfred Sellenrick of Fairbury received his honorary high school diploma from District 8 School Board 2003Sam Mishler of Fairbury was awarded the 2003 Sharon Howes Memorial Award.The plaque was presented to Mishler by People First of Nebraska, Inc.
