Joubert Is November Veteran Of The Month

Written by Sherry L. Joubert Sherry L. Joubert of Fairbury was honored as November Veteran of the Month by Jefferson County on Tuesday morning, November 7, 2023. In addition, she was also presented with a Quilt of Valor and a hand-made patriotic art by Marley Rosener.Joubert was born in Lincoln but was raised in various parts of the Midwest because her father was in the Air Force. She graduated from high school in Wichita, Kansas, and began working for Hartford Insurance Company as a claims processor. A year later she decided to join the Navy and attended boot camp in Orlando, Florida. After boot camp, Joubert was transferred to NAS (Naval Air Station) Whiting Field in Milton, Florida, where she worked for the Navy Morale Welfare and Recreation Department. Joubert’s second duty station she was sent to Naples, Italy. Upon arrival, Joubert was assigned to the boat pool. Her function there was to transport supplies on Mike Boats from the port of Naples to ships that were anchored out of port. LCM-8, or Mike Boat, is a riverboat and mechanized landing craft. After about six months of this, Joubert decided the boatswain’s life was not for her, so she studied to become a Disbursing Clerk, passed the test, and was moved to the Payroll and Finance Department, where she remained throughout her Naval career until retiring at the rank of E-6. Boatswains had planned on staying in 20 years but ended up requesting early retirement when it was offered as an incentive for downsizing the military during the Clinton administration. This was because she had two children under the age of two and could only get orders to a ship. Other duty stations boatswains served at were NSA Jacksonville, Florida; Naval Station Rodman Panama Canal; NSA Panama City, Florida; and Naval Station Argentina in Newfoundland, Canada.Since retiring from the Navy, Joubert continued to work in the accounting field until moving to her permanent home in Fairbury. In 2011, Joubert got involved with the Jefferson County Art Guild and the Beatrice Art Guild and is a member of ANAC (Association of Nebraska Art Clubs). In 2013, ANAC started working for the Jefferson County Court until she retired in August, 2020. Joubert has been enjoying retirement by traveling to Alaska, Florida, Utah, and Poland and has taken two cruises. She plans to continue to travel as much as possible. Joubert will always miss her military family and getting transferred to new places; it was a great life. Sherry was awarded: Her fourth Good Conduct Medal for the period ending May 20, 1994; the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation; Overseas Service Ribbon (Eighth Award); The Expert Ribbon for Service Rifle; Expert Ribbon for Service Pistol; Meritorious Unit Commendation; and the National Defense Service Medal.
