Engines At The Ready, It Is Race Season At Jefferson County Speedway

By Taybor MillerThe summertime is fast approaching and many racers have been anxiously awaiting the green flag to get the season underway.Taking a moment from preparing for the upcoming season and providing some thoughts was Jefferson County Speedway representative Tommy Denton.Speaking on the races ahead, battling the weather, and updates being made to the track has kept the volunteers busy, but excited to start the season.Denton told FJN, “We’ve been keeping busy with us having some rain these last couple days. The ground is pretty wet, so we’ll have to wait and see, hopefully have some cooperation with the weather to get this year started off. We’ve got a lot of great updates being made like installing bathrooms underneath the grand stands. They’ll probably be done right before or right after the midget race. We’ve brought in a new pit shack, kind of changed the pits around, moved the gate, and we brought in a new ticket shack as well, so we’ll be moving the old one back to the pit areas. That’s just a quick run down of the new additions.” It is hard to narrow down which race may garner the most importance throughout the season, or which racers should be favored. If someone was to ask Denton his opinion, every race is an opportunity for anyone, as he said, “You know it’s hard to say whose going to be the one to watch this year or really pick any particular race as being more important the any other. The fun part about this sport is that anyone can get hot and just go on a tear, or it could be a season where everyone’s trading places of being at the top. We’ll start the year off with the first three races in the JayHusker micros. Of course the Jefferson County fair is around the time we’ll be having the Midwest Midget Championship series which is probably our biggest event for the year. A $10,000 opportunity on the last night is a bucket list for the drivers, so that’s probably got to be the biggest one. Not to mention the end of the season we have our NOW 600 National points race for two days. Those are the biggest events of the year, the other ones are local racing, but those races are still affiliated with that NOW 600 Series and can accumulate National and regional points just racing with us.” It’s with that ruling that even smaller races are significant to the drivers out there. For the last eight years, the Jefferson County Speedway has built a reputation for being one of the best tracks not only in the state of Nebraska, but in the entire United States. It’s a collective effort that’s taken a lot of time, and Denton knows without it, there’s no speedway, as he explained, “The people we have, everyone is a volunteer down there and it’s on our time that we get the work done that we do. It’s amazing to look back at where the speedway was seven years ago and look at it today. It makes me so happy to have the people we do, see the changes and improvements that have been made over that time span. The volunteers that do this put their heart and soul into their work and it’s remarkable to see all that we have done and will continue to do with the upcoming season and following years.”
