City To Conduct Electric Rate Study

By Gordon HopkinsThe Fairbury City Council voted to conduct an electric rate study at a meeting on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.City Clerk Erin Reimer told the council, “The city hasn’t done a rate increase for a while.”The City of Fairbury has not had an electric rate study completed since 2019, with those rates ending with the 2021 year.In prior years, Nebraska Municipal Power Pool (NMPP) has provided this service to the city with cost savings of 50 percent. However, NMPP has stepped away from this service and is no longer an option. As a result, the City asked for bids. Two were received.The bid from Utility Financial Solutions, LLC, was $28,500.The bid from JK Energy Consulting, LLC, was $12,000, with customer audit at an additional $145 per hour. If the City desires an update within three years of the initial study, the cost would be $4,000.The council opted for the lower bidder, JK Energy.In a memorandum to the council and Fairbury Mayor Spencer Brown, Reimer wrote, “The study is needed not only to ensure a large cost of living increase to our customers does not occur since we have not passed one for 2+ years now but will also assist with the future project related to the transmission line and electric infrastructure.”Another reason for the study is the possible increased use of electric vehicles. According to Reimer, “With the popularity of electric vehicles, the city also needs to be proactive in establishing EV rates for potential customers, while also investigating net metering rates.”Per Reimer, the electric rate study analysis to be completed and rates effective April 2024.
