Drug Suspect Appears in Court, Requests Lower Bond

Jose M. Perez-Nuevas, age 21, of Fairbury, appeared in Jefferson County Court in the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, October 5, 2022. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.Perez-Nuevas is charged with possession of methamphetamine, a class 4 felony punishable by two years in prison, nine to 12 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000 fine.The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant at a residence in Fairbury on September 15, 2022. According to the Arrest Affidavit, the defendant was located in the basement, “Jose was on the couch under a blanket pretending to be asleep.”A backpack allegedly belonging to the defendant was located near him at the time and a search was conducted. The Arrest Affidavit indicated the backpack contained, “several articles of drug paraphernalia as well as a baggie containing methamphetamine residue.”The defendant was arrested at the scene.Bond had been set at $7,500, which the defendant said he was unable to pay and requested a bond reduction. Perez-Nuevas is represented by Public Defender Scott Gropp, who asked the court for a bond reduction. Gropp noted that his client had a job before he was arrested and has family in town.County Attorney Joseph Casson had previously opposed any reduction, citing the nature and circumstances of the crime. At this latest hearing, he said, “Some bond reduction may be in order.”The defendant said he could pay, “Maybe $300 or $400.”Judge Bauer agreed to lower bond to $5,000 (10 percent, and said, “That is a misdemeanor bond.”
