Fairbury Man Accused of Assault Arrested After Failing to Appear for Court

James E. Jacobson, 55, of Fairbury, appeared in Jefferson County Court via webcam on Wednesday, November 30, 2022, in the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.Jacobson has two pending cases, for which he was scheduled to appear in court in September of this year. He failed to appear and the judge issued warrants for his arrest.The defendant had signed a citation promising to appear for court.At that time, Public Defender Scott Gropp indicated he had not had any recent contact with his client. County Attorney Joseph Casson told the court, “My understanding is he’s moved to Hebron.”The defendant was arrested on November 7, 2022.In one case, Jacobson is charged with domestic assault, a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. The defendant was arrested on July 9, 2022. Bond is set at $7,500 (10 percent).In the other case, Jacobson is charged with possession of a controlled substance, a class 4 felony punishable by two years in prison, nine to 12 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000 fine. The alleged offense took place on August 30, 2022. Bond is set at $5,000 (10 percent).Gropp indicated his client was unable to pay the bonds and requested the bond be reduced to $1,000 (10 percent). Casson opposed any reduction, stating Jacobson’s previous failure to appear and also noted that $5,000 was a misdemeanor-level bond and one of the charges is for a felony.The judge concurred and denied the request for a lower bond.Another hearing is scheduled for December 21, 2022.
