Huskers Under New Rhule Book

The University of Nebraska announced Saturday, November 26, they had hired Matt Rhule as the new head coach of the Cornhuskers. Rhule is the 31st permanent head coach in the team’s history.Rhule’s contract is for $72 million over eight years, making him one of the highest paid coaches in college football. The contract is also for an unusually long period, with most averaging less than five years, according to AthleticDirectorU, a website for intercollegiate athletic directors. Nebraska Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Trev Alberts said, “Coach Rhule has created a winning culture throughout his coaching career, and he will provide great leadership for the young men in our football program. Matt is detail-oriented, his teams are disciplined and play a physical brand of football. Matt also has the personality and relationship-building skills to build a great staff and excel in recruiting.”Rhule replaces Scott Frost, who was fired on September 11 of this year. Frost was hired in 2018.Rhule previously had stints coaching the Baylor Bears in Texas and the Temple Owls in Pennsylvania. Most recently, he was head coach of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers but was fired in October of this year, shortly after the start of his third year. Rhule appeared for an introductory press conference on Monday, November 28. Alberts said 13 candidates were under consideration but Rhule was always his number one choice.Governor-elect Jim Pillen spoke after the press conference and described Rhule as, “An extraordinarily authentic human being.” Originally from New York City, Rhule played linebacker at Penn State from 1994-1997, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He also holds a master’s degree from Buffalo. He and his wife, Julie, have three children, Bryant, Vivienne and Leona.
