Jefferson County Fair Turns 150

The Jefferson County Fair has now been a staple of local summer fun and entertainment for a century and a half.The first annual fair of the Jefferson County Agricultural Society, as it was then known, was held in the county on September 9, 10 and 11, 1874.Upon receipt of the pamphlet for the very first fair, which was sent to numerous publications, the Columbus Journal published, “We know nothing, personally, of the character of the farmers of Jefferson County, but judging them by the formation of an agricultural society we should say they were an intelligent, energetic and enterprising set of citizens, and know how to show the rest of the world what wonderful crops, cattle and horses they can raise in Jefferson County. Success will finally come to your efforts, and we hope it may even be vouchsafed to the farmers of Jefferson at their first fair.”In celebration of the 150th Jefferson County Fair, the fair board is hosting a parade to kick off the fair on Sunday, July 9th at 4 p.m. There will be two divisions to enter floats in the parade with one being youth organizations like 4-H clubs & FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapters. There are prizes in each division with the winner getting $100 and $50 to second place.The theme for this year’s fair is “150th Fair of Family, Food and Fun.”
