Local Judge Is One Of Four Applicants To Nebraska Supreme Court

Four Nebraska judges have applied to replace retiring Chief Justice Mike Heavican on the Nebraska Supreme Court.

One of those judges is David J.A. Bargen, one-time City Attorney for Fairbury and current district court judge in Southeast Nebraska’s First Judicial District.
The other three applicants are Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Funke, Sarpy County Judge Patricia Freeman and Lancaster County District Judge Ryan Post.

The Judicial Nominating Commission will hold a public hearing in the Supreme Court Courtroom in the State Capitol in Lincoln on October 4, 2024, at 10 a.m. At that time, the commission will interview all applicants.

For those who prefer to provide testimony in writing, Judicial Nominating Commission has asked for written testimony no later than September 27. Heavican is retiring October 31, 2024, after 18 years of service on the bench,. He made the announcement in August of this year.
