Diller-OdellBoys: Diller-Odell Griffins went 1-1 in the first week of basketball losing a close one to Pawnee City on Thursday, December 1 with a final score of 49-50, but bounced back with a sold win at home against Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer with the score 40-24.In the first game of the year, a heart breaker, but great outings by Kaden Sutton as the only Griffin to reach double digits scored 25 points with eight rebounds and one block as well. Cooper Morgan was able to contribute nine points, and accounted for 14 rebounds of D.O. 35 total rebounds.Braydin Wendland was one point off double digits with nine as he also had three rebounds as well. The second game saw the duo of sophomore Cooper Morgan and senior Kaden Sutton reaching the double digits in points and nearly a double-double each respectively as Morgan would have 20 points, grab nine rebounds, swat three blocks, give out two assists and take three steals as a stat stuffer in the first win of the season. Sutton was able to have 13 points while coming down with eight rebounds, and one block. Zach Warren provided a solid rebounding effort getting six while giving out thee assists, and giving a lift on defense with two steals and one block as well.Girls: Diller-Odell Lady Griffins start the season off 2-0 besting Pawnee City 67-25 and Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer with the score 54-33. The first game of the season and Myleigh Weers came ready leading the team with 25 points as she had four steal assists and seven steals on the night as well. Baileigh Vilda the only other one to reach double digits dropped 19 points while getting a double-double grabbing 10 rebounds as she gave out one assist, took three steals, and had one block. Karli Heidemann was one point off from a double-double as well getting nine points while having 11 rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block.Also contributing to the 20 steals D.O. had in the game were Jadeyn Hajek and Tatum Schroeder each having three, while Ashley Duis had two steals and Madeline Parade had one as well.The second game of the season Weers was able to go for another 20 plus as she scored 24 points as the only one to reach double digits, along with dishing out seven assists and getting three steals. Karli Heidemann another night just one point off from a double-double getting nine points and finishing the nigh with 10 rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. Jaedyn Hajek was able to contribute eight points while grabbing seven rebounds as she gave out two assists and had one steal. Thayer CentralGirls: Thayer Central Lady Titans started the season off 2-0 beating Republic County 53-37 and then holding on to the close one beating Lawrence-Nelson 31-29.The opening night was a solid one for Thayer Central as they would rack up just over a baker’s dozen in steals being led by Natalie Tietjen with seven steals while leading the scoring with 20 points and gave out seven assists.Ava Wiedel was able to score in the double digits also as she scored a lucky 13 points, grabbed two rebounds, had one assist and swatted two blocks to lead the team.Piper Havel nearly scored in the double digits with nine points and grabbed six rebounds with one steal in the victory.The second game a rougher night offensively but a win that Thayer Central will take as head coach Erin Kowalski was able to comment on the last two games and the games ahead saying, “We played Republic County on Thursday and they are a much improved team from last year, but we were able to hold them off and get the win 53-37. It was a great team win, we did an awesome job pushing the ball down the floor to get easy transition lay ups. We had a lot of energy and great communication.“For our Lawrence Nelson game, we didn’t play as sharp as we did on Thursday. We missed some easy shots, and when we got to the line to shoot free throws we were only 7 for 17. What kept us in the game to give us the win, was making Lawrence-Nelson turn the ball over. We did a good job of pressuring the person with the ball to either cause them to travel or throw the ball away. We also did a good job of rebounding this game to give ourselves second chance shots. Overall, we did what we needed to do to get two wins this week, now we need to focus on our next two opponents, Diller-Odell and Fairbury for this week.”Boys: Thayer Central Titans off to a good start going 2-0 as they pull out the close win against Republic County 36-34 and defeat Lawrence-Nelson 40-24.In game one the top performers for Thayer Central were Duncan Wiedel leading the team with 10 points, Sam Souerdyke scored eight, Grant Wiedel had seven along with Lukas Kroll and Will Heitmann each having five.The top performers for the next game was Sam Souerdyke scoring 24 points to lead the team, and was joined in the scoring column with Duncan Wiedel getting nine points, Will Heitmann had four, and Grant Wiedel had three. Wilber-ClatoniaGirls: Wilber-Clatonia Lady Wolverines start the season off 2-0 in the first week of competition as they best Tri County 36-26 on Thursday December 1st and on Friday December 2nd pulled away with the 31-16 victory as they hosted Heartland. W.C. will be looking to carry this momentum into hosting Raymond Central on Thursday, Dec. 8.Boys: Wilber-Clatonia Wolverines went 1-1 on the first week of competition as they lose on the road 26-36 to Tri County on Dec. 1 and bounce back to take the overtime win 41-33 against Heartland. W.C. will be looking to hosting Raymond Central on Thursday December 8th. Southern:Boys: Southern Raiders unable to keep up the scoring output as they fall to Palmyra 53-64 on Friday December 2nd. Southern will be on the road going up against Johnson County Central on Tuesday December 6th. No stats were available by release of press time.Girls: Southern Lady Raiders strong start lift them to the first win of the year beating Palmyra 43-37 on Friday December 2nd. Meridian:Girls: Meridian Lady Mustangs off and running as they start the season 2-0 defeating Dorchester on Friday December 2nd 45-23 and then Nebraska Lutheran 50-39 on Saturday December 3rd. The first night for Meridian had the defense on full display as the Mustangs racked up 22 steals as a team. Kaylee Pribyl scored nine points and was able to lead the defensive effort by getting five steals along with two rebounds and two assists. A trio of Mustangs would be right behind Pribyl in steals as Ana Dimas, Taelyn Filipi, and Jaala Stewart each had four steals as well. Dimas was able to lead the team as the only one to reach double digits scoring wise with 10 points while grabbing five rebounds and gave out two assists. The second game another great defensive outing by Meridian as Jaala Stewart led the charge on defensive and offense as she had 13 points while snatching up five steals, had one block and gave out two assists, and was joined in the double digits for scoring with Jaslyn Ward as she had 11 points, five rebounds, and among a quintet of Mustangs having three steals as well. The other four were Ana Dimas, Kaylee Pribyl, and Jaylee Sobotka. Then another trio of Mustangs contributed to the defense as Keira Niederklein, McKenzie Hofstetter, and Taelyn Filipi each had two steals in what was another great outing for Meridian. The next game will have the Lady Mustangs on the road as they take on Cross County on Friday December 9th.Boys: Meridian Mustangs unable to find their footing as they lose 11-64 to Nebraska Lutheran Saturday December 3rd. Meridian will be looking to bounce back on the road as they will be taking on Cross County on Friday December 9th. No stats were available by time of press release. Fairbury:Boys: Fairbury Jeffs hold on for the tight 45-44 win in the season opener on the road against the Fillmore Central Panthers. The Jeffs offensive push was led by the duo of Seniors Jackson Martin and Jax Biehl as the only two to reach double digits in scoring with Martin dropping 15 points with three steals, two rebounds and two assists along with Biehl who had 12 points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists. Blake Starr was able to score seven points, took away three steals, snagged four rebounds and had three assists to give his team. Fairbury will look to press on as they will be hosting Superior on Tuesday December 6th and Thayer Central on Saturday December 10th.Girls: Fairbury Lady Jeffs unable to mount the comeback and lose a close one 36-38 to Fillmore Central on Saturday December 3rd. Fairbury looks to bounce back as they’ll be hosting Superior on Tuesday December 6th and then Thayer Central on Saturday December 10th. No stats were available at the time of press release.
