Jeffs Come Out Swinging

Often times you’ll hear a coach say that it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish that matters.For the Fairbury Lady Jeffs, the softball season had plenty of downs, but more ups that would meet the eye, and the eyes of doubters would see that whether it be baseball or softball. The game, and at times the season, is never over until that final out.Fairbury would put all the lessons learned from the regular season into an incredible two-game stretch on October 2. In their first round match Fairbury was up against Centennial.During the regular season the Lady Jeffs had battled Centennial to close endings, but were 0-2 against their first round opponent.The third meeting was the charm for Fairbury with a hot start pushing them on to a 12-7 victory. Fairbury would rush their opponents with five runs coming across in the first inning, two in the second, one in the fourth and in the sixth while they put the nail in the coffin with three runs in the seventh inning.A big contribution to the runs scored came by Logan Wentz and Addy Marschman as each would come away with a home run and multiple RBI. The bats seemingly coming alive at the right time for Fairbury pushed them pass their opponents as they would then take on Pierce.Fairbury had been tested and would have an uphill battle as they trailed by as many four runs at one point in the game, but rallied into a remarkable comeback victory with a final score reaching 21-16 to claim the Class C-6 Sub-District championship. From a team total of 17 hits, seven of those hits were doubles. Those coming from Madi and Izzy Ohlde, Malayne DeBoer, Lauren Wanamaker, Logan Wentz and Lexi Mau. Madi Ohlde’s second hit was a big one as she was able to hit a home run as well as she tied for leading the team with three RBI.As a team Fairbury came in with a (0.254) batting average and a total of 148 runs scored from the season. With 159 hits, 35 were doubles, five triples, and five long balls with 109 RBI. As a team 85 walks had been drawn, Fairbury came in with a (0.356) on base percentage and 27 bases stolen.Fairbury Lady Jeffs finished runner-up in the Class C-1 District final losing in a double header against St. Cecilia. FHS lost the first game 1-17 and the second game went to a final score of 5-19 on Friday, October 6.In the first game, Fairbury managed four hits, two of which came by Autumn L’Ecuyer, while Malayne DeBoer and Addy Marschman each contributed one hit while Logan Wentz had the one RBI with a ground out.In the second game Fairbury would manage seven hits as a team as Izzy Ohlde and Addy Marschman each went two for two while Autumn L’Ecuyer, Logan Wentz and Lexi Mau each contributed one hit. Marschman, Wentz, and Mau each had one double, Mau and L’Ecuyer both tied with two RBI.As the Class C-6 Sub-District Champions and Class C-1 District runner up, Fairbury ends with a record of (6-26).
