Schramm, Mumford Runners-Up In Division, Outstanding Performances At State By All

A day after winning the right to be called District 3 wrestling champion in the 185-pound division, Makena Schramm was back into her training, and when asked if she had taken a moment to smell the roses, Schramm only said, “Thank you sir, but the job’s not done yet.” Entering the Girls State Wrestling tournament on Feb. 17 Schramm was sporting a dominating record of 23-1. After receiving a bye in the first round Schramm would take on Darian Earth (Winnebago Girls) in the quarterfinals. With a look of poise, determination and ruthlessness in that match Schramm would show a sense of urgency from the start and succeeded in getting the pin astoundingly around a minutes time and in doing so helped her advance to the next round taking on Zeena Villanueva (BRLD). That was also a match which Schramm bested her opponent by displaying an aggression and tactful approach getting the pin again around a minute to move onto the finals. The championship match at 185 had Makena Schramm taking on senior Kenzie Parsons (Pierce). Parsons (30-1) was able to catch a pin in the second period to claim first. Schramm ends the season with a 25-2 record, the first ever Fairbury Girls Wrestling District 3 champion, and second place medalist at state in what was a memorable first inaugural year of girls wrestling the in the state of Nebraska. Fairbury senior Kazz Hyson finished fourth at 285-pounds after a roller-coaster ride of tough competition. In the first round Hyson was able to win by decision over Dahlas Zlomke (Battle Creek) 3-1 in a match that came down to the last minute. Moving on to the quarterfinal Hyson would again win a close one by decision over Bridger Rice (Ord) 3-1 with that round being decided within the last minute remaining. It was in the semi final where Hyson would put out a spectacular effort but lose his first match to Quade Peterson (St. Paul) who won by escape in the ultimate tie breaker 2-3.In the consolation semi-final round Hyson would bounce back and edge out the decision over Zlomke by a score 1-0. In the third place match Carson Fehlhafer (Centennial) won in sudden victory over Kazz Hyson to end the tournament getting him a spot among the top four of the 285-pound class C division. FHS junior Connor Gerths, showed that he had fight in him until the end of the clock. After coming in as an eleventh seed at districts and qualifying for state, Gerths was carrying a lot of momentum. A back and forth first round against Hayden Kluthe (Ord) had the people on the edge of their seats. After losing the lead late, Gerths came up with an incredible reversal to get the decision win 5-4 to secure a win in the first round. In the quarterfinal Gerths would lose by tech fall by Max Lautenschlager (Bishop Neumann), and by decision in the second round of consolation to Keyden Uhrich (Lincoln Lutheran). Gerths ends the season with a 25-30 record. FHS’s Noah Hyson as a sophomore finished the year with a 29-22 record at 220-pounds. In the first round Hyson would lose by fall to Trey Warner (Ord), but bounced back entering consolation rounds winning in the ultimate tie breaker over Jackson Masek (Lincoln Lutheran) 4-1. Hyson would then fall to Kase Thompson (Battle Creek) by fall.Riley Arner of FHS finished 27-26 at 160-pounds, as he would lose by fall to Cal Janke (Archbishop Bergan) in first round, but came back to win by decision (11-8) over Dawson Schram (Tekamah-Herman) in the first consolation round. Arner would lose in sudden victory to Tobin Olson (Valentine) to end his tournament run. FHS freshman Hayden Bear finished the season 13-25 and was unable to secure a win at state after losing to eventual top six medalist Grady Romshek (Aquinas Catholic) by fall in round one, and Ace Hobbs (Mitchell) by fall in the first round of consolation. Fairbury Head Wrestling Coach Derek Garfield was able to give some thoughts from state saying, “I was very pleased with how our team performed at the state tournament. Being able to qualify five guys and having four of them win some matches down there was fantastic. We had some young kids who wrestled down there who all gained valuable state wrestling experience that will be great for them heading into next season. For Kazz to finish his career with a state medal was absolutely awesome to watch. He has dedicated his whole life to the sport of wrestling and I was so happy to see him finish his career on the medal stand! Kazz finished his career with 120 wins and will leave as one of the best to come out of our program! ” Wilber-ClatoniaThe Wolverines had the dynamic duo of the senior Colby Homolka (152-pounds) and freshman Iverson Mejia (160-pounds) at Omaha this past weekend and despite not having desired outcomes, had a great showing throughout the tournament. For Mejia getting his first taste of state wrestling was a rough start for his first day, losing to Logan Bryce (Raymond Central) by fall (1:27). Mejia came out with a great tenacious effort that would help him win by fall over Tucker Banister (Gordon-Rushville) in the first consolation round and the second consolation round earn a decisive victory by score of 8-3 in the decision over Trev Arlt (Yutan). However, in the third round Iverson would lose to Brayden Johnson (David City) by decision (2-6) ending his season with a record of 33-14. Homolka had a shorter season due to injury, but had a strong district winning the district title. His momentum would carry into the first round as Homolka would get the pinfall win over Rylen Uhrich (Lincoln Lutheran). In the quarterfinal, a different outcome with Logan Burt (Tekamah-Herman) catching Homolka with a pin. The next day another great start as Homolka would get the (4-0) decision over Jace Freeseman (Gordon-Rushville), but then lose 0-1 to Dylan Ancheta (Wood River). MeridianMeridian wrestling had one Mustang in the state tournament being represented by sophomore Jackson Huls (132-pounds). A good effort in the first round was to no avail as Huls would lose to Bryan Conn (Apraphoe) by fall in the first round, and would lose by decision in the first round of consolation to Wesley Jacobs (Hay Springs). Tri CountyA trio of Trojans consisting of seniors Brevin Damrow and Caden Reedy along with junior Jurgen Baker competed at state TC. For Reedy (138-pounds) it was a solid first round, in the brief moment with his opponent Keyden Uhrich (Lincoln Lutheran) was receiving medical attention, Reedy was asked by his coaches, “Are you having fun?” and with a smirk Reedy nodded as he continued his effort to grab the victory and did so (14-6) by major decision. In the quarterfinal Reedy would go against his toughest competition of the year and lose by fall to eventual Class C 138-pound Champion Ty Rainforth (O’Neill). Competing in the second round of consolation Reedy would find himself on the losing end by decision 4-8 to Josh Spatz (David City) who went on to place in the top four. Reedy ended the year with a 45-6 record. Brevin Damrow (220-pounds) ran into a rough draw in the start losing to Kase Thompson (Battle Creek) by fall, who would end up eventually placing fourth. The second day would prove to better as Damrow would get the pin-fall victory over Brody Fischer (Red Cloud/Blue Hill) in the first consolation round. However in the second round Damrow would lose to Trey Warner (Ord) by 1-8 decision. Damrow ends the year with a record of 23-12. Jurgen Baker (182-pounds) as a junior didn’t have the outcomes that was hoped for after losing to Taylon Pascoe (Gordon-Rushville) 3-9 in the first round and Dylan Silva (Logan View) by fall. Baker ends the year 29-11. Thayer CentralThayer Central wrestling sent seven Titans to state wrestling and had a great showing. This year Thayer Central had some medalist efforts with the highest coming from junior Gunner Mumford placing second in the class D 160-pound division. Mumford came out with confidence and won by decision (8-3) over Garett Schneider (Twin Loup), and showed that same energy in the Quarterfinal winning by decision (8-3) over Beau Lake (Bayard). In the Semifinal match Mumford ran into some stiffer competition, and in facing that challenge Mumford turned up the aggression while scoring a big takedown to take control and secured his way onto the finals over the #2 rated State wrestler Aiden Kuester (Neligh-Oakdale). It was there were Gunner Mumford’s momentum would be halted after a battle with Steven Menke (Bridgeport) where Mumford would lose by a close decision (3-5). A great tournament run by Mumford ends as 2nd place at the 160 division with a 47-6 record. Senior Brenner McLaughlin was able to end his last year on a high note taking 3rd place in the class D 132 division going 4-1 in the State tournament. The first round would have Brenner McLaughlin coming out focused and ready to execute and did so by winning by fall over James McGinnis (Kimball), and continued that momentum by winning (13-2) by major decision over Brayden Brecka (East Butler). A solid start, halted by a heart breaker loss as Nickolas Kuehn (Kenesaw) won in tie breaker against McLaughlin in the Semifinal. Then in the consolation Semifinal McLaughlin would bounce back with a strong decision (7-1) victory over Kyle Durfee (Mullen) to advance to the 3rd place match. A close match, McLaughlin would scrap out the (3-2) decision win over Matt Bruns (Sutherland) to take his place as 3rd in the top three of Class D 132 with a 47-7 record.Junior Triston Wells had a great showing in the State tournament as well placing 3rd in the Class D 113 division going 4-1. Wells displayed a great sense of urgency with his aggression in the first round getting the pin-fall win over Korbin Carlson (Winside). Wells would edge out a close (5-4) decision win in Quarterfinal against Blake Devitt (Hitchcock County) to advance to the Semifinal round. It was in that round that Wells would lose the decision (2-7) to Gatlin Krepela (Pleasanton). The consolation round was a struggle from the start, but Triston Wells bounced back with a close (6-5) decision victory to move to the 3rd place match where Wells would win by the (4-0) decision over Nolan Osborn (Twin Loup) and end his season with an impressive 48-4 record placing in the top three of the Class D 120 division. Freshman Colter Sinn the youngest of the Titans getting his first crack at State wrestling proved to have a bright future ahead medaling with 6th place in the division. First round action would end in victory with Sinn getting a dominant (8-1) decision victory over Matthew Johnson (Kimball). Quarterfinal action had Colter Sinn pull off the pin-fall win over Hudson Urkoski (High Plains Community). Maybe it was youthful exuberance, or that he just got caught, but Sinn’s momentum would be stopped in the Semifinal against Carter Brandyberry (Alma) by pin. The consolation Semi had Sinn fall to Jeffery Forsen (Mullen) by pin as well, and unfortunately in the 5th place match Tristan Olson would best Colter Sinn by (1-2) decision. Despite the ending of the tournament Sinn’s first year was a successful one becoming a medalist, and sporting a 25-13 record with a bright future and more than likely more State competition awaiting him in the coming seasons. Senior Ashton Sinn unable to place at State still came away in the tournament with a pair of wins. For first round competition Ashton Sinn grabbed a pin-fall victory over Dayton Gipe (Sandhills Valley), but would lose to eventual 3rd place medalist Jacoby Mann (Winside) by major decision (0-8) in the Quarterfinal. Ashton Sinn would bounce back with a solid pin-fall victory over Oliver Nutter (Sutherland) in the second consolation round but would lose the (0-4) decision to Lane Bohac (East Butler). The ending not what Sinn had hoped for, but still a stellar career that racked up over a 100 wins as a Titan and finished it with a 44-9 record as a Senior. Junior Cameron Schulte at 195 came out with great energy which helped him get a quick and decisive pin-fall win in the first round over Jaycob Young (Maxwell). However in the Quarterfinal Schulte would lose late by pin to Keegan Shuler (Hitchcock County). Schulte looked ready and refocused and clawed out a great (10-5) decision victory over Jeremy Felix (Alma), but would lose to Alex Gideon (Burwell) by decision (0-5) in the third consolation round. A great outing for the Junior as Cameron Schulte ends the year with a 41-10 record. Sophomore Nate Burd at 152 was unable to secure a win as he would lose to Ethan Baumert (Guardian Angels Central Catholic) by pin in the first round and would lose by fall to Spencer DeNaeyer (Mullen) in the first consolation round ending his season with a winning record of 26-24 with plenty to build off of for the next season.
