Titans, Mustangs Are Conference Champs

Both Meridian and Thayer Central won their respective conference tournaments last week.For the Lady Titans, it was a clean sweep.The Thayer Central Lady Titans swept up the competition en route to winning the SNC Conference championship last week.Thayer Central was on a tear from the start of the tournament and did not lose a single set throughout as they swept 2-0 against Fairbury on Oct. 16.Then on Oct. 17 Thayer Central had swept 3-0 against Milford in the semi-finals and against Centennial in the conference championship.Top efforts in the tournament for Thayer Central came by way of Jadyn Bowman leading the offense up-front with 43 kills, contributed three aces and while on defense had a great presence as she racked up 34 digs.Ella Bruegemann had a great tournament as well coming as second with kills getting 25, had four aces, and led the team with 46 digs on defense. Contributing some aces and facilitating for the offense came by the duo of Ella Brugemann and Olivia Wiedel. Brugemann was able to finish with five aces along with 61 assists and Wiedel would have four aces and gave out 36 assists.Thayer Central was on a six game win-streak and hosted the Class C2-8 sub-district on Monday and swept Sutton to face Tri County in the sub-district final.Mustangs Nab CRC TitleThe Meridian lady Mustangs were able to fight through adversity on the way to winning the CRC Conference Championship on Oct. 17. Meridian’s tournament unfolded with Meridian sweeping Osceola in the first round, a 3-1 set victory against Dorchester, and a five-set battle victory of 3-2 against Cross County.From the tournament, notable performances came by Jaala Stewart as she finished with 74 kills, five aces, three blocks, and 68 digs. Kaira Niederklein facilitated a great number of those passes as she came away with 99 assists, had three kills, three aces, two blocks, and 41 digs. McKenzie Hofstetter was a great second option in the tournament as she contributed 21 kills on offense and defensively led the team with 11 blocks, and had 19 digs.Following the tournament, Meridian would lose 1-3 on the road against Humboldt-Table Rock Steinauer on Oct. 19.On Monday the Mustangs hosted the sub-district tournament facing Hampton and swept to head to the sub-district final against High Plains.Jeffs Beat Sandy CreekAfter winning the first round match against Wilber-Clatonia, losing to Thayer Central and then Sutton; the Fairbury Lady Jeffs end their SNC tournament run on a good note beating Sandy Creek with the sets going 25-19, 23-25, and 25-14 on Oct. 17.Top performances from the tournament for Fairbury came by the efforts of Evelyn Timmons leading the team with 36 kills while serving three aces.On the defensive side Timmons contributed three blocks and 44 digs. Deja Vocelka was able to have five aces served and had a great tournament passing-wise as she racked up 80 assists.Defensively, Vocelka had four blocks and 20 digs.Coming up with a nice impact on both ends was Micah Friesen as she would have 20 kills, and three aces offensively, meanwhile on defense Friesen had four blocks and 24 digs.Fairbury headed into Monday’s first round match-up with Malcolm in sub-district action with a record of 12-19.Entering tournament play, some athletes find themselves among the top in their class as for Fairbury, it comes by the efforts of Freshman Evelyn Timmons being among the top five in the Class C1 hitters as she’s had 414 kills this year on a (38.7) kill percentage and Senior Deja Vocelka being among the top 15 for Class C1 in assists as she’s amassed 694 on the year thus far.It wasn’t easy, but FHS won over Milford 25-21, 26-24, 15-25, 25-16.FHS faced Centennial in the sub-district final. Results in Friday’s digital edition.W-C Wins Two StraightThe Wilber-Clatonia Lady Wolverines lost in the first round of the SNC tourney against Fairbury on Oct. 16, but would bounce back with two straight sweeping wins as they bested Heartland and then Fillmore Central on Oct. 17.W-C ends the regular season with a 14-18 record and was at Thayer Central for the Class C2-8 Sub-District against Sutton.W-C lost 1-3 against Sutton in the first round of sub-districts.Trojans Pick Up Solid WinThe Tri County lady Trojans end their season on a good note as they come away with a 2-1 set victory against Sterling and swept 2-0 against Southern on the road Oct. 17. Tri County headed to the sub-district finals by defeating Superior 3-1 and will face Thayer Central.Griffins Get ‘W’ To End Regular SeasonThe Diller-Odell Lady Griffins lost 2-3 on Oct. 17 to Johnson County Central, ended the regular season on a high note at home as they defeated Exeter-Milligan/Friend on Oct. 20.Showing resiliency, the Griffins took EMF to the limit, pushing the game to five sets, 25-21, 25-19, 20-25, 17-25, 8-15.Diller-Odell hit the road for the Class D1-1 sub-district as they faced number three seed Dorchester at Johnson-Brock and won in five sets, 3-2. They face Johnson-Brock in the sub-district finals.Season Ends For RaidersThe Southern lady Raiders season comes to an end as they were swept by Freeman in the first round of sub-districts.
