Blake Starr Signs To Play Basketball At Doane

For Blake Starr, making the most of his opportunities paid off in the end as he signed recently with Doane University to continue his basketball career. Standing at 6’5’’, Starr was able to grow into a well rounded player. For career totals, by the end of his career Starr scored 364 points, 194 rebounds, 30 assists, 48 steals, and 21 blocks with that all coming from only 54 games in his career.During his senior season, before being cutoff early due to the previous season’s knee injury, Starr was having career high averages in every category with 12 points per game, six rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. From the start of his career to the end, Blake believes that it’s been educational journey that’s helped him get ready for the next level, “I couldn’t be in the position I am without my coaches. It sucked having the injury to deal with, but at the same time it helped me be in a position where I was forced to see the game from a different perspective and learn that way.“Before the injury, my junior year we had a great back-court and I wasn’t required to have many ball-handling responsibilities and was asked to be a spot up shooter and spread the floor. During the time with the injury, I learned more about what coaches wanted from the guard position, and during my senior season I was prepared to take more of that role on with confidence.I hope the kids coming up realize that every opportunity is important and it doesn’t matter what the job is, do it for the team and you’ll be a better player for it.”For Starr it was the effort and confidence shown from Doane’s coaching staff in his skills all the while looking beyond injury history. Starr explained how the decision came to be saying, “When I had conversations with the coaching staff, it felt good hearing them say that they didn’t care I had the knee troubles, they still pursued to have me on their team and offered a scholarship. I think my shooting ability will really carry over well for the plans they’ve got in mind from our conversations. Also seeing my brother compete at Doane for track definitely helped my decision as I’ve been around the campus plenty to know I enjoy being around it. I’m looking forward to putting in the work for the next level.”
