Diller-Odell Agrees To Join Beatrice Baseball Program

Play ball! For some Diller-Odell High School students, those words will be spoken at the beginning of the 2025 high school baseball season as the Diller-Odell school board agreed to join the Beatrice Baseball squad next season. On April 8 the board voted unanimously to coop with Beatrice for two years, starting next season. This will, however, mean that the spring golf coop with Wymore Southern is off after one year.According to Diller-Odell Superintendent Mike Meyerle, the concept of the coop with Beatrice has been smooth.“No one has contacted me in a negative way,” Meyerle said.Meyerle said he spoke to the athletic director for Beatrice and the annual cost of baseball is around $25,000 and with approximately four players from Diller-Odell joining the Beatrice squad next year, the cost to Diller-Odell will be around $4,000. There will be no new mascot, the Diller-Odell players will simply be joining the Beatrice Orange baseball team. Players from Diller-Odell will be responsible for getting themselves to Beatrice for practice and, during an away game situation, would be getting themselves to Beatrice and leaving from Beatrice High School on the bus. Meyerle noted the baseball players from Diller-Odell will be younger players.The Diller-Odell board agreed to drop the spring golf coop with Wymore Southern after one year. The cost of the coop for Diller-Odell was $2,500 and had four golfers.Meyerle noted the reason for dropping golf was the baseball coop would mean one additional boys sport, which would mean, according to Title IX, an additional girls sport would have to be added.“If we do it, we will not coop golf next year with Southern because we would have one additional boys sport, compared to girls’ sport. We could maybe do it and get away with it, but I don’t want to do that,” Meyerle said. Meyerle noted that if the board does not think the coop with Beatrice was advantageous to Diller-Odell, there were options on how to handle the situation.“Do it for two years and, if for some reason, you don’t want to do it anymore, don’t do it,” Meyerle stated.The coop Diller-Odell has with Wymore Southern for softball will remain, Meyerle reported. Last season Diller-Odell contributed nine players to the coop and will have about the same next season, Meyerle noted. The cost of softball to Diller-Odell was $4,350.“We are looking forward to continuing softball with Southern and looking forward to the baseball partnership with Beatrice,” Meyerle said. “Nice opportunities for our students.”
