Fairbury Woman Gets Four Months For Attempted Drug Possession and Child Neglect

Alexis S. Olson, 22, of Fairbury, was sentenced to four months in jail by Judge Linda Bauer in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, March 2. 2022. Olson was originally charged with possession of methamphetamine, a class 4 felony punishable by two years in prison, followed by nine to 12 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000 fine; child neglect, a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by one year in jail and a $1,000; and possession of drug paraphernalia, an infraction that carries a $100 fine. Olson pleaded No Contest to the remaining charges. On June 4, 2021, a Department of Health and Human Services worker, assisted by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, visited the residence of Olson in response to a report of possible child neglect. According to the Warrantless Arrest Affidavit, electricity in the residence had been off since May 1 of this year.The affidavit indicated deputies searched the defendant's truck and residence and discovered drug paraphernalia that field tested positive for methamphetamine. Olson was then arrested. In accordance with a plea agreement, the State later filed an amended complaint. The charge of possession of methamphetamine was reduced to attempted possession, a class 1 misdemeanor. The drug paraphernalia charge was dismissed. The defendant requested probation. Judge Bauer ordered the defendant to obtain a chemical dependency evaluation. Olson advised the court she had an appointment for an evaluation scheduled for March 15. Her attorney, Public Defender Scott Gropp, who asked for a continuance. Jefferson County Attorney Joseph Casson objected. “I told you to get it right away,” the judge told Olson. “I think you could have worked a little harder to make yourself a candidate for probation.” Gropp asked the judge to take into consideration that, “She sat in jail in another county for 67 days.”Olson was originally scheduled to be sentenced on December 8, 2021, but failed to appear. Gropp, advised the court at that time his client has been arrested and was in custody in North Platte, Lincoln County. Judge Bauer sentenced Olson to 120 days in the Jefferson County Jail for attempted possession and 120 days for child neglect. The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning at the same time. Olson asked the judge, “Can I please have another chance?” The Judge said, “The sentence has been pronounced.”
