Fairbury head volleyball Monica Hinrichs wanted to give her four seniors a win in their final game on the Jeffs homecourt, and so did all the rest of the Jeffs varsity squad.
It showed in the Jeffs play on Tuesday on Parents Night in a match with Falls City – the third time the teams met in 2019.
Going into the game the teams had each won a game against each other previously and after the first set of Tuesday’s game, it looked as if the Tigers were going to claim the series lead.
Forcing turnovers has been a consistent staple to the Fairbury football team’s success this season and was the case yet again on Friday when the Jeffs squared up with Sandy Creek for their final home game of the season.
The Jeffs forced eight fumbles and recovered six of them in their 21-7 win over the Cougars.
Fairbury got on the scoreboard first, gaining a 6-0 lead heading into the second quarter. Sandy Creek scored a touchdown before the half to make it a 7-6 at the break.
All season long the Fairbury Jeffs softball team never gave up.
From their first game of the season – a comeback victory against Freeman – to their come-from-behind 6-5 win over Guardian Angels Central Catholic in the Class C state championship game to end their 2019 campaign, having faith in themselves to get the job done is something the Lady Jeffs never lost sight of.
Area Cross Country teams took to their respective district meet this past Thursday and when all was said and done with last week’s races, a total of three teams and 19 individuals from the Fairbury Journal-News coverage qualified for state.
The Thayer Central girls, Tri County girls, and Wilber-Clatonia boys each qualified for the state meet as a team. The Wolverine boys won the District D-1 meet in McCool Junction while the Lady Titans placed second and the Lady Trojans took third in girl’s division.
For the second time in school history, and the first time since 2003, Fairbury is playing for a state championship in softball.
Fairbury’s perfect tourney run continued on Thursday at the Bill Smith Softball Complex in Hastings in a colossal battle between the No. 1 and No. 2 rated teams in the state – the top-ranked Jeffs and second-ranked Guardian Angels Central Catholic.
The Jeffs advanced to the semifinal matchup with GACC by way of an 11-4 win over Malcolm in the first round and a 10-0 win over Cozad in four innings on Wednesday evening.
The location of Friday’s game between Thayer Central and Tri County was moved to Beatrice High School due to plumbing issues on the Trojans homefield on Friday.
While the location changed, Tri County’s offense continued to put up big numbers as they have done a majority of the 2019 season.
The Trojans were averaging 45 points per game coming into Friday’s contest and that number increased after Tri County’s 58-40 win over the Titans.
Three area volleyball teams – Tri County, Fairbury, Diller-Odell – took part in the Falls City Invite on Saturday.
The Griffins continued to rebound from their only loss of the season on Tuesday, October 8, against Fillmore Central with a tournament title on Saturday at the eight-team event.
When the going got tough, Fairbury’s entire varsity lineup got going during the most important contest of the Jeffs 2019 season thus far.
Fairbury’s been in plenty of tough situations during their 2019 campaign. Out of the Jeffs 23 wins heading into Saturday’s district final matchup against Malcom, nine contests had been come-from-behind victories.
That theme continued during Saturday’s District C-3 title game at the Fairbury Softball Complex.
