Passion for the game of football carried the Diller-Odell Griffins at home on Friday night against Humboldt-Table Rock-Steinauer (HTRS), 36-18.
Up 16-0 after the first quarter, a few miscues gave HTRS new life, down just four points (16-12) at one point in the second quarter. A spirited speech in the huddle by head coach Chris Schluter halfway through the second quarter gave the Griffins purpose and new vigor.
Fairbury could not get the offense going on the road Friday night against Superior. The Jeffs were blanked, 20-0, in a game that saw a late surge by the Wildcats prove to be the difference.
“It was a close game throughout, Superior made some plays down the stretch that allowed them to pull away,” FHS Head Football Coach Matt Edson said, noting that his squad never showed an ounce of quit. “Our defense made many great stops inside the 20, the kids continued to battle.”
After receiving a bye in the first round of their own tournament on Saturday, the Fairbury Jeffs softball squad faced off against Grand Island Northwest and lost 8-3.
A three-run inning for the Vikings put them up 4-0 in the fourth inning and 5-1 after five innings. Ellie Ohlde led the Jeffs with two RBI and Jami Mans and Cassidy Sipek each had a double in the game.
Jami Mans had three strikeouts in the contest on the mound for the Jeffs.
In the third place game, the Jeffs were victorious 11-6 over Scottsbluff.
The Tri County Girls Golf Team hosted their home Invitational Friday at Hidden Acres Golf Course. Tri County finished with a team score of 404, which earned them a second place finish behind tournament champion Lincoln Lutheran (380).
Pius X finished third with a score of 410 and Norris finished fourth with a 422.
Fairbury showed heart and determination against Milford on Tuesday (Sept. 1). The Jeffs drew it out to five sets but came up short, 25-22, 25-23, 25-18, 25-22, 15-9.
On the road Thursday, the Jeffs lost to Auburn, 20-25, 21-25, 20-25.
The Diller-Odell Griffins volleyball team showed resolve in their match-up with area rival Wymore Southern on Sept. 1. The Griffins used poise and some powerful offense from the one-two punch of Addison and Karli Heidemann to win 25-20, 25-8, 25-22.
Sophomore Karli Heidemann racked up 16 kills on the night while senior Addision Heidemann had five kills, as did freshman Lily Swanson. Ava Lovitt, Elecea Saathoff and Madelyn Meyerle each had four kills. The Griffins had 38 kills in the game while Southern had 12.

Southern/Diller-Odell Raiders Varsity watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 13-8 loss to Malcolm on Tuesday.
The Southern/Diller-Odell Raiders collected 15 hits and Malcolm had six in the high-scoring affair.
Malcolm got things started in the first inning with a sac fly scored one run for Malcolm.
The Raiders tallied five runs in the fifth inning. The offensive firepower by the Raiders was led by Alyssa Salts, Kendrea Troxel, Mallory Denner, and Taylor Trauernicht, who each had RBIs in the inning.

Wilber-Clatonia faced Milford on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and lost 10-2.
On August 31, the team lost to Weeping Water in a close contest, 7-8.
The Wolverines were up tied at 7-all in the fifth inning when a solo run scored in the final stanza by Weeping Water proved the difference. W-C had eight hits on the day while Weeping Water had 13.
